I've read the book Prey...
But the nano-tech is almost like a virus, but requires human injection (I believe).
I think the idea behind it is that you need to inject just the one into a human cell, it manipulates the DNA to reproduce..
Unless we can produce nanomachines which are able to self-penetrate as such...

unless we somehow breathe life into these machines, they will not be able to reproduce more than perhaps being robots in an assembly line.

and if we could breathe life into these machines, WTF?!?!?!?!?

I love your humor. The problem is that the current machine will CREATE the next generation, not in a lab but out in nature. That allows for mutation.

PERSONALLY, I see a potential problem, but a very unlikely one.
I can imagine nano-tech becoming a thing in daily life, but I think that we wont see mutation problems etc
to be honest though, since it only affects living/organic things, if any sort of outbreak does occur a simple, harsh, fence will fix it. isolate air supply, food, etc, and let the people inside it die, but prevent the spread.
Quarantine.

I think they should send them to the Moon or Mars. Or maybe another planet. see what happens there, where there is no life.

Its hard to fight something you cant see.

Maybe this is how The Borg began. Assimilated by their own technology...
