Opposition's Ma wins Taiwan poll

news.bbc.co.uk

A huge crowd cheered and whistled at opposition Kuomintang headquarters, and firecrackers were set off across the capital, Taipei, as the preliminary results were reported on local TV networks.

\\\"People want a clean a government instead of a corrupt one,\\\" said Mr Ma, quoted by AP news agency.

\\\"They want a good economy, not a sluggish one. They don\\\'t want political feuding. They want peace across the Taiwan Strait. No war.\\\"

This is really good news for China. Not so good for the US. Ma is against buying shed loads of defenses from the US and he will work to improve the cross straight ties.

Under his leadership Taiwan could quite conceivably become part of China under the one country two systems - system!!

So what will all the US ships that are sitting just of the coast in international waters do now?

There will be no war. Taiwan will no longer be a back door for the US to have a pop at China from.

Will Tibet benefit from the change of direction in Taiwan, will they start to receive more outside help? Well more that the CIA etc etc is probably already giving them.

How much of a link is Ma to the US? He did study there and I believe he was also born in Hong Kong, does he still have connections to the US...

Is he just another puppet?

Time will tell I suppose... What do you think?

Ive always thought that the only amicable solution to this problem is for autonomy in political and economic fields.

Taiwan needs to retain its democracy and the ability to set its own economic agenda. Taiwan would additionally benefit from having a voice in international affairs via PRC's UN seat etc.

China would save face by not having to concede defeat, which is really all they are after.

The same solution would work for Tibet, and the same solution is currently working in Hong Kong!

There is a peaceful ending to all this, where its a win-win situation for everyone. I just hope that nobody interferes in the process.
