Giant Marine Life Found in Antarctica

Topic started on 21-3-2008 @ 01:30 PM by biggie smalls

I came across this article on drudgereport, and thought it was interesting.

Scientists who conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of New Zealand's Antarctic waters were surprised by the size of some specimens found, including jellyfish with 12-foot tentacles and 2-foot-wide starfish.

A 2,000-mile journey through the Ross Sea that ended Thursday has also potentially turned up several new species, including as many as eight new mollusks.

It's "exciting when you come across a new species," said Chris Jones, a fisheries scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "All the fish people go nuts about that - but you have to take it with a grain of salt."

It really amazes me how little we know about our own planet. We know more about space than we do the ocean.

The largest part of our planet and we don't know squat. I'd really love to take a submarine dive thousands of feet down, and take a look at what's going on down there.

I was reading about this today and found it very interesting, so naturally I did an ATS search and found your post. Shame it got no replies.

They have found some truly amazing stuff thousands of feet down in the Antarctic Ocean.

The article below has some great information regarding the gigantism of some of the creatures down there.

National Geographic Article

''We have collected huge worms, giant crustaceans, and sea spiders the size of dinner plates.''

Reading about the life at 6500 feet below the surface in in these frigid waters makes it hard to believe that life could not survive on other planets with different climates.

Bump.

Isn't it strange how they seem to 'know' that we are destroying tens of thousands of species a year without apparently even being aware of how large jellyfish can grow in certain oceans? So much 'certainty' and so much ignorance/lies....

I soo agree with each of the above posts. Good find. So True.

That would be a perfect area for such searches, arent the giant squid recently studied with such fanfare from that same area?

I hope that some day "aquanaut" will be a term that everyone knows and aspires to be...
