I for one believe you saw it if you say you did. I would think that it's report worthy too since every report I read about this event said that it was "highly unlikely" anyone actually saw it with their own eyes. I thought they might be wrong about that. I've heard about the notification system before, and though I only have an 8" scope under mediocre skies I'd still like to be informed in case something happens with a significant afterglow while I'm out observing. Where do you go to get signed up for emails when these things happen?

Here's a couple of interesting articles that may put into (unimaginable) prospective the amount of energy of GRB's.

This article (blog),however not scientifically based, is an interesting read.

This CalTech article, written in 2000 has some FAQ's relating to the amount of energy needed to create such massive bursts.
