Organized Crime

Ugg...I finally managed to log on again this week, at the crack of dawn. Long week, but explinations later.

Okay, so over the course of my week at home, I got to thinking about organized crime. it's all around us, whether we see it or not. Smuggling, extortion, protection- all things that very few of us ever see. my line of thought got to the fact that many of these...syndicates, for lack of a better collective term, started as secret societies, or in some cases not-so-secret-but-still-exclusive societies. For example, the Cosa Nostra and the two largest Triad lodges began as secret societies.

My questions are: Do they have connections to other socieites? Are they pawns of the forces that be, or freelancers looking for a buck?

A problem I also wish to address is the concerning lack of knowledge on the part fo many of the activities of these people. I would like others to step forwards and share what knowledge they have (barring those who are bound by omerta, of course) so that we may all feed off of it and learn about this....undertouched angle of conspiracy theorism.

The main groups I hope to focus on are the Triads, Yakuza, Vory (russian syndicates), La Cosa Nostra, and other groups that have escaped my somewhat limited knowledge. I apologize for the somewhat bizzare kilt to this post, but I am dead tired, as always.
