Police agencies upset over Ratemycop.com

abclocal.go.com
By Tomas RomanSAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A new Web site is infuriating police agencies all over the state and the country. It's called Ratemycop.com and it allows users to rate the performance of more than 130,000 police officers whose names are posted there. That may sound good to some, but police believe the site puts them and their families in danger.

"I'd like to see it gone," says Officer Hector Basurto, vice president of the Latino Police Officers Association. He recently learned about Ratemycop.com and is furious.
"Having a Web site like that puts a lot of law enforcement, in my eyes, in danger because it exposes us out there," says Officer Basurto.

With the second line of your post removing any sense that I could have a reasoned debate with you.....why bother?

Like other posts positively dripping in accusations, nasty comments and insinuations; your post is bait, not an actual attempt to engage someone of opposing views.

As most of you know who have seen my posts, know I am currently a Law Enforcement Officer. Being such here is my take on this site.

I have no problems with the idea of the site. I think it could be a good thing for officers to be rated by the citizens he/she works for and comes in contact with. Now of course there is some concerns as well, not just because I am a LEO, but just COMMON SENSE should tell you, this could go to far...here is why.

First thing is, it is the internet. ANYONE, from anywhere could go on and lie about officers conduct. I could log on right now not ever meeting or dealing with an officer from all over the country and falsely say a certain officer is abusive, or unprofessinal. I could have had a run in with the law and just because I am not man enough to except I did something wrong, log on and lie about my experiance with officers/departments. So how accurate/reliable will it actually be? Hell just look at some of the posts on this site when it comes to Law Enforcement....hate is the majority. So even if an officer was professional, courteous, and did their job right, the pure hate for us "pigs" or "Nazi's" (as many of you love to call us) would only make you say negative stuff anyway.

Now one last thing...as I stated, I don't mind the site as long as it gives just the name and department in which you work for, as thats public information anyway. What I WILL NOT support, is if officers/deputies home addresses, phone numbers, etc are posted. Then you do risk injury or tactics against that LEO's family (wife, husband, children, etc). That is unexceptable, or should be by ANYONE's standard.

So again, have the site..no problem here. Can you actually trust the site? That will be tough as I said, to many things to not keep good oversight. And finally remember, the hate/anger you feel towards us should stay towards us, so as long as our families are not involved...then again...I am fine with it.

What are you talking about? What was nasty, accusatory or baiting about that? He posted a link to a website and has got an ACTUAL Police Officer giving a reasoned debate. What exactly is your beef?

I see your position and respect you opinion.

To me, I see the grossly negative generalizations about police as an issue. To many those kinds of characterizations are irrelevant. To me, it's not minor and a point worth arguing about.

I think most cops are good, honest and caring people. They don't take the job for fame or fortune. They are the butt of constant criticism and critique.

IMO, many of the discussions that take place here are proffered on a bed of dishonesty or at the very least the arguments put forth are so heavily biased that any discussion that follows is moot because the original assertion is incorrect to begin with.

In my limited experience, most people that have a problem with LEOs are those that are constantly on the wrong side of the law.

My opinion is thus: to have such a negative opinion of the police and to cast them in such a negative light comes from personal experience. Otherwise, why would you - the royal you - have a vested interest?

I see police in their cars, doing their thing and that’s about he extent to which I engage local law enforcement. I don’t have a negative opinion of them because what they do from day to day doesn’t affect me. I am not putting myself in a position to warrant police attention. So, they do their job, I go about my business and that's, that.

Further, IMO, I notice that most of the charges of abuse, negligence, corruption, etc against police come from “frequent fliers” of the criminal justice system.

BTW, I am not suggesting anyone on this thread is on the wrong side of the law, or anything like that.

Finally, I see humans as intrinsically good, with some bad apples. Police are no exception.

Actually, their performance is evaluated. By their superiors, with oversight from elected officials, typically the city council & Mayor’s office.

I don't know where you live but around here the mayor, the city council and their underlings, receive special treatment by the police and sheriff's dept. Especially in reguards to DWI infractions. One hand washes the other, so that kind of performance evaluation is worthless besides being an affront to the actual law abiding citizens such as myself.

You are right, many people that have bad opinions of LEO's are on the wrong side of the law. Some people like me stay on the right side of the law, and have been abused by LEO's, or have seen it happen way too often.

In my OPINION there are so many corrupt cops out there that most people have completely lost faith in all cops due to their personal encounters with the dark side.

5 years ago I had a much different opinion of police than I do now. I really think there has been a tactical shift in most police departments away from "protect and serve" to "cause PTS".

Now because of that shift we need things like "Ratemycop.com".

I am much more afraid of being assaulted by a cop than a thug.
