However, I was listening to music using my headphones, so I only noticed that something was going on when my floor started to shake.))
As some people pointed out there indeed was a strange sound like something had fallen. Another interesting thing is that, as some people already said, birds started to sing. Personally I had never experienced any kind of earthquakes before, but to my surprise I was kinda calm.I don't really know how to explain this, but it was like I knew everything was going to be alright. Any way back to the serious business.))Did anyone notice strange objects in the sky? When the whole thing ended I looked out of the window and saw something that resembled the Moon. The only problem was that I never ever had seen the Moon in such position before. I got so interested that I took a few photos with my cell phone.
After that I turned my tv on to watch the news, after about 15-20 minutes I looked out again to see the object and guess what, there was nothing there.
It probably was the moon, but still I thought it may be worth to let you know.
PS:Sorry for my English, it's not my first language.

let's see the photos and we might be able to help you out - might be the moon but it is always interesting to see.

Got to admit here i agree with you, when it happened i was laying in bed watching futurama on the laptop . The bed rolled north/south, because its on casters and wooden floor but the idea of earthquake didn't enter my head, it felt as though somebody had been pushing and pulling at my bed because nothing else in the room seemed to move.

Oh, and to the california dude, gotta agree with you there, overreaction i did too but bear in mind, most people in this country haven't really experienced an earthquake so its a frightening experience. Saying that though, there was very minimal damage, only fragile buildings suffered damage. i can't see the Uk getting any quakes stronger than that (touch wood ) so first aid in the car for quakes might be excessive, although they're handy to have anyway!

20, maybe 30 years ?

Of course there are a lot of quakes all the time, but they occur on the same faultlines and techtonic plates, this is strange because there isn't any dodgy techtonic plates in the UK. It's strange if we get a good thunder storm for petes sake! :p

Noticeable earthquakes in the United Kingdom are probably more common than you'd imagine...

BBC News PREVIOUS QUAKES IN THE UK
April 2007 - Folkestone, Kent (magnitude 4.3)
December 2006 - Dumfries and Galloway (3.5)
September 2002 - Dudley, West Midlands (5.0)
October 2001 - Melton Mowbray (4.1)
September 2000 - Warwick (4.2)
April 1990 - Bishop's Castle, Shropshire (5.1)
July 1984 - Nefyn, north Wales (5.4)
June 1931 - in North Sea near Great Yarmouth (6.1)

please don't the mistake of not being prepaired.en.wikipedia.org...

read up on this please . if not for you for your loved one's.
ask the people in the same region today if they thought there would be any reason to have to worry about a tragic earth quake where they live. they would say the same thing as you.
for a place not known for earth quakes if the same where to have happen there today millions of people would be in dire straights to say the least.
i only say this because i care and don't wish any harm to my compadre's across the atlantic............

Here's a list of earthquakes in the British isles in the past 30 days:

www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk... *

And here you can get details of some of the larger 'quakes in recent years:

www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk...

This week's was bigger than last year's Folkstone Earthquake, and was felt over a wider area, but did not cause so much damage.

Most 'quakes in the British Isles are as a result of post glacial isostatic adjustment - ie the crust rebounding after being depressed by the weight of ice during the last ice age - otherwise known as isostasy Some are also due to settling of ancient fault lines in formerly volcanic regions such as Wales and the Scottish Highlands.

* the 'quake I'm most intrigued by is that at Thame - which does not seem to have an obvious cause?

Hi Essan,

The one in Thame was prob caused by settling after the severe amount of water that was covering a vast area along the M4 corridor.
