Study finds immigrants commit less crime

www.reuters.com

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Immigrants are far less likely than the average U.S.-born citizen to commit crime in California, the most populous state in the United States, according to a report issued late on Monday.

People born outside the United States make up about 35 percent of California's adult population but account for about 17 percent of the adult prison population, the report by the Public Policy Institute of California showed.

According to the report's authors the findings suggest that long-standing fears of immigration as a threat to public safety are unjustified. The report also noted that U.S.-born adult men are incarcerated at a rate more than 2 1/2 times greater than that of foreign-born men.

"Our research indicates that limiting immigration, requiring higher educational levels to obtain visas, or spending more money to increase penalties against criminal immigrants will have little impact on public safety," said Kristin Butcher, co-author of the report and associate professor of economics at Wellesley College.

The study did not differentiate between

This sounds like another propeganda piece to me, which Reuters seems to be churning out more and more lately. It may or may not have validity, but I get the sense that this is one of those "Immigration is good" fodder-feeding pieces, since our gov has been doing nothing to squelch the mass influx over our borders, and seems to be encouraging it. Trying to shift public opinion perhaps?

Thoughts?

Actually I wouldnt be suprised if this was true, imigrents are far more likely to abide by the law than citizens born in that country. here in the UK every imigrent I know or have known have been more polite, harder working and have never broken the law the a citizen born in the UK.

I bet is the Latino lobbyist groups that paid to have this study done, after all anybody with the right money can pay no only for laws in their benefit but for deceiving reports and numbers of their liking.

All for the right price.

the report found that in California, U.S.-born men were institutionalized 10 times more often than foreign-born men (4.2 percent vs. 0.42 percent).

The way I read it this "study" is junk science. It seems to focus solely on the number of institutionalized criminals. That is, the number of criminals in jail. This says nothing about the number of crimes committed or which group is more likely to commit crimes. Basically this is a study that says which group is more likely to get caught and serve time for crimes.

This really isn't a shock is it? I mean which criminals are easier to find and lock up? The illegals or those who are registered, fingerprinted, and documented and have a known work and home address?

Thanks for pointing that out. That was my next question but you read my mind.

The study did not differentiate between documented immigrants and illegal immigrants.

Thats pretty funny considering being here illegally is committing a crime (whether incarcerated or not...not being most of the cases).

This study is flawed.

Ha! Genius deduction.

So should we start a new study to see how many ILLEGAL immigrants are doing anything illegal? I wonder what the ratio would be in that group?

They are clearly only using those actually in prison to guage the amount of crime. At least half the crimes committed never end in imprisonment, so the numbers are skewed right from the start. Most illegal immigrants are deported or run back to Mexico while on bond before they can be tried and imprisoned. Then they come back and commit more crime. Clearly those people did not figure into the calculations. This is something we hear about every day in Mesa, Arizona. Illegal immigrants are not here to obey anybody's laws.

You forgot a few laws that every illegal immigrant break every day. Driving without a liscence, driving without insurance, identity theft, possesion of a forged ID, tax evasion, faliure to regerster a vehicle, failure to file a tax return, fraud in general. The list goes on. So this article should be moved to skunk works just on morals.

For the pro illegal immigrants crowd here on ATS, that would be, uh, all of them - 100%.

For a very horrific example of this see my PTS thread on this:

in the process of reading Krstin Butcher's pdf file titled "Why are Immigrants' Incarceration Rates So Low? Evidence on Selective Immigration, Deterrence, and Deportation" I notcied on the bottom of page 12 the fote note that states

7 These calculations come from running logits on a sample of the native born only and then using the estimated coefficients to predict institutionalization for immigrants.

So basicly it is made up by her. Definitely deserving of skunk works.

You guys really don't take long to jump to illegal immigration do you. Maybe its different in the US, but for those of you who actually work with someone from another country what are they like? I dont care about illegal immigrants, there breaking the law and should be delt with as such. you do all remember that the majority of US citizens come from a family of immigrants?

like I said ive found that most foreign people in the UK that ive meat work pretty hard and most will quite happily do any job.

People keep going on about have bad legal immigration is (never mind illegal) except for the fact that no one in the UK wants to do the crap jobs except these immigrants who will enthusiastically in most cases do any job.
