Australia can be trusted with F-22, says Gates

AUSTRALIA could be trusted with the United States' Lockheed F-22 Raptor fighter, US defence secretary Robert Gates says.

Currently an Act of the US Congress bars any foreign sales of the Raptor.

The aircraft is the US Air Force's most advanced fighter and its sale is prohibited to any foreign country

So here we are. One step closer to being in a position to purchase the F-22 Raptor.

At least with the F-22 we would be somewhat closer to being able to maintain air superiority of our own mainland, in the event that Indonesia ever decides to come take some of our ample space.

NEVER going to happen. Indonesia's military is all about keeping Indonesia together. Yes they have lots of troops and seem big and scary sitting off there to our north, but even if they wanted to invade, they just don't have the capability. They run a grey water navy with dilapidated ships and equipment, and their sailors get sea sick if they get in anything above sea state 3.

Having said that, Indonesia has just signed equipment deals with Russia for new fighters, submarines and other equipment. It is important Australia maintains its technological edge over its near neigbours, and the F22 would certainly guarantee that for quite a few years to come.

Ah, So i was right to say that Australia and the United States do have very strong ties, the US isn't selling it to anyone else, not even the British, but they will sell it to Australia...

Then again, Australia is a kind of "mini" America/Europe if you ask me...

Us Brits are gonna be happy with the Eurofighters and the Tornados I think. We could prob do with the JSF when that is available to replace our Harriers, but we're also said to be looking at Osprays (JSF's would rock though)

But we spent all our money on Eurofighters and AH-64's... No new toys till xmas 2015
