currently running an athlon 4000+ overclocked from 2.4 to 2.64ghz, 2.5gb ram, radeon x1950xtx 512mb. wife has a similar setup but with an opteron 148 (similar to the 3700+ (2.2ghz 1mb) and a geforce 8600 gts 256.

i'm actually going to buy 2 new sets for both of us this weekend once my check clears:
e6550 2.33 c2d, gigabyte p35 motherboard, 2gb ram. i'll give her the 1950xtx and i'm getting an ati 3870 512mb.

one thing i was wondering - why is the e6600 so much more? the fsb is only 1066 compared to the 1333 on the 6550 and the end result clocks only 66mhz faster. same cache size, but it's almost $100 more than the 6550. is it just an old pricing scheme that never got revised or is it actually significantly better in some way?

this is the first intel chip i have ever purchased for myself. i've been an amd guy since the K6's.

actually, i saw that the 45nm penryn's just came out. the e8400's are hard to find, but the xeon e3110 is the same core with the xeon name - even the cpuID's are identical

specs are 3.0ghz, 6mb cache, 1333 fsb. just ordered 2. i'm REALLY excited. can't wait. =)

oh, and it was only about $200. cheaper than the e6600 and only $30 more than the 6550.

O.k.
But don't drool on your keyboard.
Cosmos 1000 full tower case
Phenom 9600
Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5
4 gig OCZ Reaper DDR2 Dual Channel @ 1066
OCZ Game Stream 850 watt PS
Radeon HD 3870
LiteOn SuperAllWrite Sata DVD writer
Viewsonic 22" 2ms 1000/1--4000/1 LCD
Hitachi 750 gig Sata 300 Main drive.
Generic Esata 500 gig external
Couple hundred gigs generic IDE for game images and such.
Still have 3 internal and 2 external SATA plugs open for expansion.

Always an AMD fan.
Looked at an Intel setup, and was going to be around $1200 more for about the same.

Cost me $2400 to build this one, and still not sure about the HD3870, a bit noisy, won't play splinter cell, and some owners complain it gets hot and freezez up. I test my grafx on doom 3 at ultra mode.
Doesn't quite do it, but 512 meg is just a bit short considering the requirement for ultra is 500 meg.

A Core 2 Quad rig would not have been $1200 more... it would actually be very comparable. My whole computer (box only) cost $1200USD.

IMO, get an E6850.

the 6850 is 3ghz, 4mb cache, and 65nm...the 8400 is 3ghz, 6mb cache, and 45nm and is $60 less...judging by reviews it's THE cpu to have right now for performance/cost.

hope i don't have issues with my ati 3870. i was considering the new geforce 9600 - it benched VERY close to the 3870.

any thoughts?

XFX GeForce 8800 GTS Extreme 640MB PCIe

Do NOT get the 8800GTS 640. Get 8800GT 512, or 8800GTS 512... only ones that are 512mb. 640mb version is overpriced and uses an older, power hungry core.

Already bought and installed a long time ago.

Though I did get a deal on it, so the price wasnt as rough as your thinking.

Power hungry? Oh well, im not planning to SLI anytime soon so its not like my system is starved for power.

But thanks for the tip....
