Hamilton takes hard-fought win in German Grand Prix

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton scored the fourth victory of his 2008 season here at Hockenheim on Sunday - and he did it the hard way. For the first 34 laps he ran away and hid from his pursuers, led by Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, but then Timo Glock ran hard into the pit wall after the right-rear suspension of his Toyota appeared to fail, and all hell broke loose.

The safety car was deployed as the shards of debris were cleared, and the moment the pit lane opened there was a rush to refuel for the final stints. In came everyone, apart from Hamilton, BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld and Renault’s Nelson Piquet had just been in when Glock crashed.

Great performance by Lewis, McLaren is confirmed to be the strongest team on the most techincal circuits, but today the driver played a very important role. Great overtakes in the final part of the race, even though a tactical mistake of the team: Felipe had brakes and tyres issues.
.

Fear for Glock, after his Toyota's rear gear suspension failed: a very dangerous incident, that time ago could have been fatal for the driver:

Congrats to Nelsinho Piquet: there were many rumors that he could have been fired, but now the guys in renault will think twice before taking such a decision: he's young, let's give him the time. He didn't started with a McLaren

Yes, it was a great race from Lewis Hamilton, without the slightest mistaken and showing the type of aggressive racing in the final laps that he used to show in GP2.

Nelson Piquet Junior finally had a race without problems and with some luck with the safety car period, contrasting with a bad race from Alonso.

Glock's accident was really a good example of the safety of today's Formula 1 cars, he got away with, apparently, just a sore back.

Hamilton heads McLaren one-two in qualifying

Lewis Hamilton eased to pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix after dominating qualifying along with McLaren team mate Heikki Kovalainen. Ferrari's Felipe Massa was third fastest.

BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica will start the race fourth, ahead of the Toyota of Timo Glock and the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

Ferrari F2008 - shark-fin engine cover

As part of their Hungarian aero update, Ferrari have included a heavily-revised engine cover. This full-height shark fin profile (inset) is almost identical to those already introduced by Red Bull, Renault, Toro Rosso and Force India. This revision improves the car's rear-end efficiency and balance, and to enhance its straight-line stability at high speeds. It better manages airflow close to the engine cover, and in particular reduces turbulence generated by spillage from the engine air inlets. This addition could well be used at the season's remaining races, albeit with ongoing revisions. With traction arguably the F2008's weak point at the last round in Hockenheim, even a small improvement in rear downforce should prove beneficial.

McLaren MP4-23 - nosecone winglets

These horn-like winglets halfway up the MP4-23's nosecone have been introduced by McLaren in Hungary. It's a solution not dissimilar to the 'delta' winglets on the BMW Sauber and one that provides a better quality of airflow to the car's sidepod inlets and rear end. It does this by improving the management of the airflow exiting the front wing. This doesn't directly increase front downforce, but instead improves the aero efficiency and downforce load in the central and rear sections of the car.

Renault engineer shot himself
A Renault Formula One engineer is believed to have shot himself at the team's headquarters in Oxfordshire.

Police are not treating the death of William Millar as suspicious, after he was found on a path within the Whiteways Research Centre.
The 53-year-old was found with a head wound on Wednesday morning after staff heard a gunshot.
Mr Millar of Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire, was a research and development engineer.
The apparent suicide came days before the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest this weekend where Renault drivers Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jr will take to the track.
Renault issued a tribute to Mr Millar following his death.
"Everyone at the team is deeply shocked to lose such a valued member of staff who had been with the team for 27 years.
"We have a very large site but it happened within the premises on a footpath.
"Known as Bill, he was involved in designing anything that can improve the car."

Ferrari failure helps Kovalainen to maiden win

Welcome to the world of winning, the first of many.

That was how McLaren boss Ron Dennis greeted Heikki Kovalainen as the Finn scored a surprise victory on Sunday in a Hungarian Grand Prix that should really have been Felipe Massa's race.

The Brazilian took his chance with both hands and thrust his Ferrari past the front-row McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Kovalainen at the start, and then dominated proceedings.

Life got easier for him when Hamilton suffered a deflated front left Bridgestone tyre on the 41st lap and dropped back to 10th place, and in truth Kovalainen never looked likely to challenge Massa. But gradually the McLaren moved closer and closer to the red car as the final laps were reeled off. Massa completed the 67th of the 70 in the lead, but then a spectacular engine failure stopped car number two just past the line. As Massa was clambering out, Kovalainen swept past en route to a triumph that made up for all the poor fortune he has had to endure this season as Hamilton's partner.

Heikki Kovalainen became the 100th winner in Formula One history with the first victory of his career.
Incledible unluck for the poor Felipe

After a great start and a race with no mistakes, he's been betrayed by the engine of his Ferrari which blow just three laps from the finish. This race was well deserved by Felipe, in my opinion.

Unlucky also Hamilton, able to recover many positions after having a flat tyre: it's speculated that his driving style is too aggressive for the tyres on the most technical circuits.

Sebastien Bourdais, Kazuki Nakajima and Rubens Barrichello had problems, with flash fires during re-fuelling.

Congratulations to Timo Glock, great performance after the orrible incident at Hockenheim. Kimi 3° and Alonso 4°.

It would be a deserved win for Massa, if it wasn't for his proverbial bad luck in Hungaroring.

But it was an excellent race for Kovalainen and Glock, even if Massa and Hamilton could have got to the end without any problems they would have been third and fourth.

Toyota had a good day, with second for Glock and seventh for Trulli.

Renault also had a good day, with Alonso 4th and Piquet Jr. 6th.

A driver's eye view of Valencia

Situated in the marina area of Valencia, this brand new street course promises to be one of the most exciting additions to the Formula One calendar in recent years. Hemmed in by concrete walls, the 25-turn circuit combines a mix of high and low-speed sections and is wide enough in places to offer genuine overtaking opportunities. Good straight-line speed and stability under braking are therefore paramount, as is good mechanical grip through the mix of low and medium-speed corners. Here Renault describe how they plan to set-up the R28 for the European Grand Prix…

Aerodynamics:
The track layout means that the teams will run with relatively low levels of downforce, similar to those used in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix. This is possible as there are no high-speed corners and good straight-line speed is important down the long back straight. However, it wont be until free practice begins on Friday that the team will be able to finalise aero levels, which can depend on the grip offered by the tarmac.

Brakes:
The circuit is expected to be particularly demanding on the brakes and on a par with somewhere like Bahrain. There are frequent large stops from over 300km/h, such as turns 12 and 17, leading into tight second gear corners which will put high energy though the braking systems. Brake cooling will also need special attention with teams likely to use reasonably large cooling ducts.

General car set-up:
The drivers need a responsive and well-balanced car with good change of direction to deal with the high-speed kinks that are spread around the circuit. But, as always, this needs to be balanced with a supple enough suspension to give good mechanical grip in the low-speed corners. There are a few curbs that the drivers can use, mainly on the corner exits, but until the drivers take to the track it is difficult to predict what impact they will have on car set-up. Good braking stability is also important, especially at the end of the straights, to avoid locking wheels on a track where there is little margin for error.

Tyres:
Bridgestone will bring the soft and super-soft compounds from its 2008 range, just as it did for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The softest compounds from the range will offer good grip on what is likely to be quite a slippery track surface to begin with. However, like any temporary circuit, we can expect the track to begin the weekend very green and gradually evolve, becoming faster with each lap as it rubbers-in. As yet, the teams have no tyre data and so evaluating tyres and assessing the abrasive qualities of the tarmac will be a priority during free practice.

Engine:
The mix of straights, low speed chicanes and hairpins means that the engine will be used in a very stop-start fashion. About 54 percent of the lap is expected to be spent at full throttle, which is below average for the season and so it will not be too severe a test for the engine. The key to a good lap time is therefore not peak power, but good torque to help launch the car out of the slow corners and onto the straights. Getting the car well balanced will therefore be of utmost importance to avoid understeer out of the low-speed corners to allow early application of the throttle.

An interesting track and a race that started on the wrong foot for Nakajima, who collided with Alonso, spoiling the Spaniard's possibilities of a good race.

Once more problems with the pit stops, Massa almost collided with Sutil and Raikkonen pulled the fuel hose while leaving the pit, and he would stop some laps after with an engine problem.

Everything went without anything special happening, with the top positions kept for almost all of the race.

An interesting track but too difficult to overtake created an uninteresting race.

A very eventful race, with rain, as usual.

After starting from pole, Hamilton made a mistake and was passed by Raikkonen, and the race went on as normal on a real track, with many fights and overtakings, until it started raining on lap 41/42, when things started getting more exciting.

Hamilton tried to pass Raikkonen at the bus stop, but failing the move he went outside the track and kept behind Raikkonen, but much closer than he was before, using that advantage to make a move on the first corner.

Heidfeld pitted from 7th on lap 43, Hamilton spun his McLaren without any problem and Raikkonen spun into a wall.

Alonso pitted from third on lap 44, finishing fourth, while Hamilton had to be extremely careful not to spin. Kovalainen did not finished the race, while Heidfeld, who had changed to wet tyres, climbed to third, but it would be promoted to second and Massa from second to first because the stewards penalised Hamilton for his cutting of the chicane, although he did not got in front of Raikkonen he did get an advantage that he would not have otherwise.

A great race, in one of my favourite tracks.

Another rainy race, another interesting race.

After a surprising pole, Sebastian Vettel lead the field behind the safety because of the rain. Bourdais, that was fourth on the grid stalled and had to start from the pit lane.

Hamilton started 15th because of a bad tyre choice on the qualifying session, but he did a very good recovery up to seventh, but staying behind Massa, who had a mediocre day, his Ferrari never looked in perfect shape.

Vettel kept his head cool, only made a small mistake at the beggining, and turned into the youngest driver ever to win a F1 Grand Prix.

Great race on a track where overtaking is not that easy.

The first race in Singapore and the first night race in Formula 1, with some 1500 projectors making it a spectacular view from the air.

Massa started from the pole, after an impressive qualifying lap almost 0.7 seconds faster than Hamilton, but his bad luck "attacked" him once more.

Piquet spun his Renault against a wall, without any problems to the pilot, but creating a safety car period that was responsible many changes in the race.

Rosberg and Kubica pitted with the safety car deployed and before "pit lane open" sign appeared, and as they refuelled they were after penalised with a 10 seconds stop and go penalty.

Massa pitted with Raikkonen just behind him when the pit opened, but his bad luck "attacked" him once more and he was given the green light (Ferrari uses a semaphore instead of the usual "lollipop" on the pit stops) to leave the pit while the fuel hose was still attached to his car.

The result was that the hose was ripped from the rig and trailed behind the Ferrari like a long tail, forcing him to stop at the end of the pit lane. Fortunately he did not collided with Sutil while he was leaving his pit, it could have been a nasty accident.

Ferrari mechanics had to run to the end of the pit lane to take the hose away from the car to allow Massa to return to the race, but the time he lost put him on last place.

At this time, Alonso, who had a problem on qualifying that prevented him to get a time on Q2 and that had started from 15th had climbed to 12th on the start and was 5th when the race was restarted.

Massa was penalised for his dangerous release from the pit, Rosberg and Kubica for refuelling with the pit closed, but Rosberg had made such a fast restart that he rejoined in 4th, behind Alonso.

After Fisichella and Trulli made their stops Alonso was left in front of the field, and pulling away from Rosberg, while Lewis Hamilton was stuck behind Coulthard.

On lap 51 Massa spun against a tyre wall after passing a slowing Trulli, and the tyre wall was left slightly out of place, and that may have had an influence on space available for Sutil to make the turn (or may have been just unlucky), and he hit the tyre wall hard, forcing a second safety car period.

After the restart, Alonso pulled away a 6 second gap in three laps and cruised to the finish, his first win and podium of the year.

It was a good race, but the track needs some work, it's too bumpy and dirty.

Thanks for the update ArMaP

I can't believe Massa's bad luck in Singapore. Has this handed the championship to Hamilton?
Considering what happened to Lewis in Belgian (also my fav track) is this Kama? Mmm, me thinks so
though you gotta feel for Massa as this wasn't his fault.

Sebastian Vettel, what a revelation. Will he be the next Schumacher in the future? Man he was impressive in Manza. At any rate, finally Webber will have a competitive teammate with Vetttel next year.

With just 3 races to go, will force India be able to score a point?

So many questions, can't wait for to see how the 2008 championship will pan out. My money is on Lewis Hamilton for the champ...

With almost everyone failing to break to the first turn, an unexpected winner would be a normal result, and that was what happened.

While Hamilton, who was slower than Raikkonen as the red lights went out, tried to regain his position and helped to create a big confusion at the end of the straight, Kubica and Alonso, who failed slightly less the breaking point, made the first turn almost on the right trajectory and sped away from the rest.

Hamilton forced Raikkonen slightly out of track (and was penalised for it some laps latter, with a drive-trough), and while fighting with Massa on the second lap he was touched by the Ferrari and spun. He had to wait for all other cars to pass him (except Coultard, who crashed on the previous turn and Nakajima, who had a broken nose on his Williams, apparently the result of hitting Coultard) and rejoined in second to last, making immediately a pit stop.

A strong recovery should be the result of all this, but while Hamilton recovered some places he never looked as fast as he should.

Massa, who was also penalised for the contact with Hamilton, lost many places and managed to recover up to eighth, but a slight contact with Bourdais when the French was exiting the pits and that resulted in a spin for Massa and a 25 seconds penalty for Bourdais, finished seventh, gaining two points on Hamilton, who finished with no points in 12th.

At the front, Kubica and Alonso kept more or less the same pace, and after the first pit stops Alonso was in first, keeping it until the end.

Kubica had to defend his position from several strong attacks from Raikkonen, but the Ferrari was not fast enough to pass the BMW Sauber on the straight and it was a little slower on the slower parts of the track.

Kovalainen, who had a god start and was third at the time, abandoned the race with engine problems on lap 17, smoke coming out of his McLaren.

Piquet, finishing fourth, showed that Alonso's victories are not just luck and that the Renault is getting better.

Both Toro Rosso cars finished in the points (although Bourdais was put out of the points with the 25 seconds penalty), showing that both drivers and cars are working good.

A somewhat uninteresting race, with little overtaking and a weak TV transmission, the director insisted in following the least interesting duels during the race, and once even changed cameras during an overtaking from one of the front runners.

A somewhat uninteresting race, with most cars racing at a distance from each other, without direct fight after the first laps.

After a great start, Hamilton started to pull away from the Ferraris, with Alonso and Kovalainen behind.

Kovalainen kept the pace but had a puncture on lap 35, and after loosing a lot of time getting back to the pit he had a problem with the pneumatic system, and the team decided that it was best to stop the car.

From lap 46 to the end in lap 55 there was only an overtaking, when Raikkonen slowed down on the long straight to let Mass pass him to second place an two more points in championship.

With seven points between them, the last race is the one that will decide which one (Hamilton or Massa) will be the next world champion.

A very thrilling start and specially end of the race that turned Lewis Hamilton into the 2008 champion.

A shower five minutes before the start made all teams start with wet tires, and the positions were more or less the same as at the start, but the change to dry tyres made some changes.

Trulli lost some time with a spin and never recovered his position, finishing eighth.

Alonso got up to third and kept his position, even improving, to finish second.

Raikkonen was third almost all the race, finishing in that position.

Vettel made another great display of his talent, driving in second for many laps but in a different fuel strategy, and when it started raining at the end of the race he was very close the Hamilton, kept the pressure and passed him, leaving Hamilton in sixth, and that would give the championship to Massa.

Glock was fourth at the time, but I think he did not changed to wet tyres at the end of the race, losing a lot of time in the last lap.

So, at the end, people saw Massa win the race and Hamilton in sixth, so many started celebrating the result, but when the other pilots reached the finish line Glock was behind Vettel and Hamilton, giving the championship to the British driver.

With the cars already stopped at the entry to the pit lane, there was a start of a fire in what I think was one of the Hondas, but nothing special.

A perfect race from Massa with a result that shows that Massa is the champion of the bad luck, he was champion when he crossed the line but he was not 40 seconds after.

First you said that Glock gives the champion to Hamilton, and in next line you judge Massa to be "Champion Of Bad Luck" ... ?

Are you people so blind to see the truth in clear blue sky?

What about Esclestone, who very clearly gave the order to Toyota to slow down, and pass Hamilton to win the tittle? This is so clear. Ferrari had no other possibility than to accept that result, but there is lot to come from this...

What I saw was that Glock did not changed to wet tyres, so the advantage he had disappeared while he was struggling with the track conditions, and the times on the live timing from the Formula 1 site showed that, so I see nothing more than bad luck for Massa, or, rephrasing it in a more correct way, when Glock decided to gamble on dry weather tyres to gain some track positions while all other pilots went to the pits to change it looked like it was enough to keep Glock in fourth, but that was not the case.

Fist of all, thanks to ArMaP for providing his excellent contribute to this thread:

Let me state beforehand that being a Ferrari fan, of course i'm not very happy for the final result, but i think that Lewis deserved to win, as i would thought the same in case Felipe would have been the winner.
Regarding the conspiracy theory about Glock lapping slow, here's a data:
Glock's last lap: 1:44.731
Trulli's last lap: 1:44.800

This data puts to rest any possible speculation regarding Glock deliberately slowing down: to try to drive faster was simply impossible.
THe two drivers, (Massa and Hamilton) made more or less the same amount of mistakes: but Massa was particularly unluck with his team's work: once he had a problem with the engine that impeeded him to win a well deserved race, another time he had that (in)famous problem during the refuelling. But he made his own mistakes. Lewis made mistakes too, but they were more breach of rules than pure driving ones: so, well deserved, champion.
I find that we had two nice surprises: Toro Rosso & Vettel: both impressed me for their performances, the team did miracles with an extremely limited budget (but with Ferrari engines, though) while the guy is the future of the modern F1.

First, nice thread...sorry I am so late to the party.

What I had been avoiding since Brazil is getting the information posted above....and from a Conspiracy Master nonetheless.

Thanks Internos, I will accept it.

I also would have liked to see Felipe get the championship....but to no avail.

Now, Honda is OUT. Who's next? And who's IN?
