Why are not all vehicles equipped with regenerative braking systems?

With all the electronic and mechanical gains we've made in the last decade I would think regenerative braking systems should be a piece of cake. I don't understand why they are not on every vehicle made today. I suppose it would save to much oil.

what would they regenerate without batteries? to have a regenerative braking system you have to have something to recharge, and the battery tech has only been around for a couple years
