I'd say you should at least try Linux, namely distros called Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 on my ATS-browsing laptop, an old IBM Thinkpad T21 that I dug out of the electronics garbage bin at work and
repaired, and have been Very Happy with it. Linux is free, and it has very good security against trojans, viruses or spyware. If you need your
computer for e.g. browsing the Web, editing photos, doing office work with Excel/Word/Powerpoint, talking on Skype, playing music or just watching
videos in different formats, Linux is an excellent choice. I use my Windows computers
only when I have to use some certain CAD application or
other specialized software that is currently not available to Linux.
I've also done some experimentation with a bit newer laptop, a Thinkpad T40. I installed Mac OS X to it (for purely experimental purposes) as I read
it could actually be done... And it was indeed possible! The other OS in that computer is of course Ubuntu Linux as well, so I have plenty of choices
to select from when I use that computer. Mac is nice, but so far I've preferred the option that really won't cost you anything -- Linux.
You can also try Linux without installing it. Just go to the
Ubuntu home page, download a suitable
CD image and burn it to CD. After that, just start your computer with the CD inside your drive, let the operating system boot from the CD and see for
yourself if you can get accustomed to the user interface. You can install Ubuntu to the computer later if you wish, and you can also choose to use
both Ubuntu and Windows in the same computer if you like. Just plug in your network cable and install all the needed wireless cards etc. before you
start, the rest should go on pretty much automatically!
I'm starting to dislike Windows more and more, together with Linux getting better and better as it develops. I'm yet to hear of a virus or spyware
that someone has found in a Linux computer. Or a Linux computer that needs a reinstall every month, six months or year after it stopped running...
That alone is a good reason to try other alternatives to Windows.
I just hope Bill G. won't send unmarked black vans to follow me, now that I've revealed this great secret and obvious threat to Micro$oft!
