Putin warns West on ill-intentions
Fri, 15 Feb 2008 03:56:30

Russian President, Vladimir Putin
Russian President, Vladimir Putin spoke for more than 4.5 hours in the final press conference of his highly successful eight-year presidency.

In the nationally televised event, he celebrated Russia's economic revival. He said that 2007 was a successful year economically, with gross domestic product increasing by 8.1 percent.

Putin responded to the first question about his main successes and failures as president, by saying: "I don't see any serious failures. All the goals that were set were reached, and the tasks fulfilled", AP reported.

He stressed that Russia wanted good relations with the West, noting however that it would stand up to any apparent threat from the US or Europe.

The Russian leader also spoke about the US plans for missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic saying that Russia's response would be to "retarget our missiles toward a system that we aren't creating. We are warning people ahead of time: If you take this step, then we will make this step."

He said, "They claim it is a protection against Iranian missiles, but Iran has no missiles of that kind. Everyone knows that," the Interfax news agency quoted the Russian president as saying.

Anyone who says nothing is happening in the world is trying to shield your eyes from the truth.
