Avrocars VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) are saucer shaped flying objects and those could have been easily mistaken for extraterrestrial UFO’s.

The following image has been taken from Avrocar.com

This project from the 1950’s proved to be very unstable and has been discontinued after years of research.

This 14 page document outlines the flight test program and evaluation of this project.

Here are the listed objectives of this test:
Define performance, stability and control characteristics of this particular testbed.
Define problem areas that may be inherent this design.
Evaluate the flying qualities peculiar to this principle of flight
To provide data from which analysis and evaluation of the “operational application” may be made.

The following agencies where involved in this project:
Air Force Flight Test Center
Weapon System Project Office
NASA

They have one of these at the Army Tranportation Museum in Fort Eustis, Virginia. I was going to go photograph it, but the person I talked to on the phone said that it was in peices and not on display.
