Beijing Olympics: Should China be put under pressure?

newsforums.bbc.co.uk

Director Steven Spielberg has withdrawn as an adviser to the 2008 Beijing Olympics in a protest over China's support for Sudan. Is he right to do so?

Mr Spielberg accused China of not doing enough to pressure its ally Sudan to end the "continuing human suffering" in the troubled western Darfur region.

Human Rights Watch welcomed Spielberg's move, and said it should prompt other corporate sponsors to press for reform.

This comes after two British athletes revealed they are members of Team Darfur – an international pressure group planning to use the Olympics to 'shame China' over its tacit support for Sudanese policies in the Darfur.

Was Steven Spielberg right to speak out? What about the British athletes? Do you think the Olympic Games should be used for political ends? Do you live in China?

Do you support Spielberg's protest?

The olympics is china was always going to be used for political reasons, like moscow 1980. Why do people even watch, something thats so riddled with cheating is beyond me.

Athletes put politics in the spotlight

A growing number of athletes from all over the world have signed up to Team Darfur, an organisation committed to raising awareness about the crisis in the troubled region of Sudan.

It wants to put pressure on the Sudanese authorities, and also those countries, like China, that support inaction against the regime.

Team Darfur plans to highlight the issue at the Beijing Olympics.
