Well, it was a hard choice between Chad, Ben and Rachel. As God, I tried to view it from the standpoint of contribution and compassion. Although Ben may be a neanderthal, his brawn and virility will likely come in handy. Chad has a good skill set but possibly no virility. Rachel, however, is probably at least slightly older (less fertile) and has no particular skill set that would ensure the survival of the group.

As God, there would be no way I could turn away a pregnant mother about to give birth and every child needs both of it's parents. (IMO - and I am God, so to speak.) And the other woman is a doctor which would likely be useful.

Sure, one of the things I always told my students when there seemed like a dilemma with no good solution is to think outside the box. A few thoughts to throw out.
First, some children are breast fed until they are 4 or 5. In addition, any mother would sacrifice for her child. Once the child needs additional nourishment, the mother would be more than willing to give him/her a portion of her rations.
Second, there is enough food and water for 5 for a duration of 3 years. That's 15 person-years of food. That equates to 6 people for 2 1/2 years. At the end of 2/12 years, a everyone exits the shelter, to face what awaits them. After all, after 3 years, the 5 would have had to leave the shelter anyway. My lesson for you today- everyone is a child of God, and everyone deserves consideration, no matter who they are.
Have a great day, and enjoy the game.

Do you still want to get rid of the mother now?

Has your answer changed somewhat?

Whatukno...it's hard to make decisions for oneself, let alone for others. We both know that.

I'm seeing your line of reasoning to include the element of compassion.

Nothing wrong with that.

Very inciteful Prof!

Thankyou so much for sharing.

This is a somewhat learning experience for myself. I get to read all the posters answers. That's ALOT of decision making, and every single answer is equally different from others.

Again, Thankyou!

I was just going to say that it would all be related to their personal CD and Mp3 collections. Three years is a long time to listen to abba or the backstreet boys.... I have to think that the hate meter would peg in about a week.

I commend you for your effort to learn. You must be an excellent student. I loved having students like you in class, it really added to the learning experience of everyone, including the professor. You have an open mind- that's great. Keep up the good work. You get an "A" from me for life-experience credits.

Well I know this is gonna make me one unpopular person. And make me look selfish. But I would kick them all out and stay there myself. Alone there is more rations and a better chance for survival, over a longer period.

If the situation lasted longer than originally forseen then alone you would survive longer. When it comes to survival I beleive that you take care of yourself first.

Just my opinion

You are such a doll! Thankyou thankyou!!!

psst...take a look at my profile; check my birthday?

Prof?

I've always been a curious person, always wanting to learn. If I stop learning and reaching out to new experiences...I'm as good as dead.

I'll always be young at heart.

Survival of the fittest eh?

A few others tried that one. Nope...no can do.

The rules state that you must choose 5 out of the 6 people listed in the OP.

You're still YOUNG. In fact, you're about the same age as my oldest son, and I still call him a kid. When I was teaching, I had a bookmark that was my favorite saying. I still keep it on my desk. It merely said:

"I am still learning" -Michaelangelo

You are right. When we stop learning, we die. I do not wish to die soon. ERGO...

Candidates:

1. Chad - Harvard Graduate. Engineering is his forte. He recently found out that he might possibly be 'sterile' - due to previous lab experiments.

2. Ben - Healthy and verile male. Yet, egotistical, and has many biases towards others because of his upbringing. Doesn't subscribe to authority very well.

3. Maria - Surgeon/Physician. Her husband left her 4 yrs. ago, and she hasn't trusted the male species since then.

4. Cecil - Diabetic. Has almost 3 yrs. of Insulin supply. Hardworking individual; no task is too menial.

5. Brenda - 5 months pregnant. Candidate #4 - 'Cecil' - is her husband. Very hard working individual

6. Rachel - Ordained Minister. Taught Theology for 25 years. Excellent teacher.

~Ducky~

I would definitely choose the engineer, sterile or not. It hasn't been proven that he is not sterile so he very well could be and he has to be intelligent because he is engineer, that profession is not easy.
I would also definitely choose ben as he is a healthy male, even though he has egotistical problems( which will probably work themselves out in a isolated environment), and because his disrespect for authority could come in handy if situations get escalated with someone else that finds their way in or a corrupt pre-appointed leader who could lead the group into disaster. I also believe that he would not be against his authority, to the point of violence, because his problem is only with his own attitude and not the destruciton of the group. Ben is also a good candidate because of one word, healthy. Good stock. his children wouldn't have to be just like him.
Maria would also be one of my choices because she is a surgeon and she, being against men, would keep ben in check. This is a very obvious choice for me.
Brenda. Definitely. This is due to the fact that she is pregnant, which means fertile, as well as she is a hard worker which always pays off in the end. Her child would become a problem later on, because he would be an extra mouth to feed, but the child would feed off of breast milk for a long time, possibly the entirety of their stay because women do not stop producing milk unless the baby stops feeding off of the breasts. The child would also be another healthy individual to have to help with the, ahem, progeny of the new human race.
This one was a hard decision for me because i really do hate organized religion and having rachael be their would be horrible for me because christianity, or something like it, would be spread throughout the new human race. I apologize to any christians out there but that is just my personal opinion, its not that i don't like you as a person, i just don't like religion. But, I would keep rachael because this "faith" would keep the surviving humans together because it would bind them together and give them a false sense of hope which is inherent to survival of humans.
that leaves ol' cecil. It doesn't matter that he is married to brenda because the emotions of their loss would pass, well just for brenda it would pass because cecil would be dead and in turn have no emotions. Brenda would get over his death eventually and be a productive member of the community. Cecil would have died after 3 years anyway and if he was able to reproduce with another his stock would be corrupted. Even his child with brenda has a chance of dying. Give him the axe and think about the betterment of the human race.

again that is just my opinion.
great post this was fun!!

This is easy Bye-Bye Ben. You see Chad and Rachel can hang out solving all our problems, in the meantime i will work Cecil to death right around the time Brenda gets her figure back. So that leaves me a couple years to be the meat in a Maria and Brenda sandwich. This is going to be awsome!

It would be Ben. Any loose cannons would be cut from the team. As far as the baby and the diabetic it would eventually be a wash.

Well as harsh as it sounds, assuming i have my significant other with me..i would turn them all away. 3 years supply for 5 people is 7 years for 2, this kind of decision is a heartless one but in a situation such as this i would not be in the buisness of helping others. Now i may consider parting with some of my supplys (food and water) and then send them on their way. If they insisted, they would find themselfs on the buisness end of some danger.

He bugs me. Brenda, you and your husband will need to split
your rations with the baby.

This isn't about repopulating, it's about surviving 3 years in a cave with each other. Ben would bother me and he would be ejected anyway.

We all get along and we all live.

Years ago I had to play a game called lifeboat where we were on a lifeboat with X amount of seats and Y amount of swimmers.
After listening to everyone trying to be noble and or suicidal, it ultimately came down to empowering yourself with the will to live. To know that you are worthy enough to survive without guilt. It was a trying day. People that were too busy trying to find loophole in the rules, died.

sorry Ben

Brilliant answer - he won't be coming back with any stranglers at a later date.

also played life boat used the clothes as floation devices and let the sharks take the weak

Flip a coin.

It doesn't matter what they do, or who they believe themselves to be presently because there has been a holocaust, or disaster as you described.. therefore who-ever they were is irrelevant sure you could argue that it is a good example of who they will become after the fact... but I would argue that you do not know the circumstances there-after so.. to be quite fair.. I would allow 'chance' or (*claps his hands*) decide what happens .... atleast the coin-tossing way it would be their own fault for not making it... no one to blame except the person who will not be there after.. lol

I mean who said it had to be democratic or socialist.. etc.. lol

maybe we should flip a frickin' coin for president.. it'd be far more accurate then their brilliant computer voting machines.. lol
