Russia Warns West on Kosovo Independence

ap.google.com

Russia warned the West on Tuesday against recognizing a unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo, saying it could set off a chain reaction of secessionist movements in Europe and around the world.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov did not mention any of the planet's hot spots by name, including Russia's troubled southern republic of Chechnya, but said recognition of Kosovo independence without it being approved by the U.N. would bode ill for global security.

Russia seems to be in the news a lot lately. Things are
heating up a bit. Serbia also said it wouldn't recognize
Kosovo's proclamation of independence.

Should Russia's warning be taken seriously?
In the related threads, Russia is also threatening
to "aim" their nukes at the Ukraine, and of course
there's the bombers buzzing the Nimitz..

Any guesses on how this will play out?

This has been thrashed out in many other threads, but to answer your question I do think the warning is a serious one. Seeing part of one country removing itself from another to become "independant" due to an ethnic majority sets a precedent. If Kosovo does break off, it will eventually become part of Albania.

A poor attempt at an analogy would be California wanting its independence because of an Hispanic ethnic majority, then eventually becoming part of Mexico. If other countries supported such a move unilaterally (Venzuela, Cuba, other "hostile" countries), the US and its allies would probably react in a similar way that Serbia and Russia are now.

If the Albanians don't want to live in Serbia, let them move to Albania...
