US Senators DeMint, Cornyn, Vitter, Coburn, Inhofe, and Chambliss have introduced a bill that that would rescind over 2 million dollars of taxpayers
money in hidden earmarks for Berkeley CA and transfer thefunds to the Marine Corp.
Here is the link to DeMint's website announcing the
bill: demint.senate.gov...
Senator DeMint: “Berkeley needs to learn that their actions have consequences. Patriotic American taxpayers won’t sit quietly while Berkeley
insults our brave Marines and tries to run them out of town. Berkeley City Council members have shown complete ingratitude to our military and their
families, and the city doesn’t deserve a single dime of special pet project handouts.”

I can understand where you are comming from. Just that. Remember that the nazis were "just doing their job" also and it didn't go too well for
them.
Disclaimer: I am NOT comparing our troups to the nazis in ANY way. Just an example where just doing your job could be used against you.

Where is the link to the statements Berkeley made?
No one is deserving on not being questioned or critiqued. Blind patriotism gets you in quite a mess, both globally and nationally.
Most of our troops are good, honest, volunteer citizens. No disrespect from me ...
but, to punish for free thought, in a free country ... now that doesn't sound right at all.
Sounds like another case of - You are only free if you agree.
Sorry, but, there have been mistakes, and people should always question their orders ... if they are right morally and humane. An Army of one, mean
one who can think for themselves and decide right from wrong, not blindly follow misguided orders from psychotic or dirty leadership.
Anyone involved in torture serving our military is deserving of being criticized ... and punished by the laws that prohibit such actions ...
including the ones giving the orders ... all the way to the top. The leader is responsible for his crew, which puts Shrub and Dick responsible for
torture as well ... and should be punished alongside those they condemn for the same transgressions.
Support our troops, bring them home to their loving families.

So,this bill may get passed or it may not,I just find the timing of it to be rather good for the congressmen who are introducing it.

Weeellll, all the senators were Republican.
Whether or not it helps them will depend on how it is received by their constituents.
But strong defense and strong law & order are usual Republican platform items.

It sounds more like Berkeley isn't getting its allowance from daddy federal government. I wouldn't say it's a punishment as much as it is taking
away an earned allowance from a misbehaving child.

Exactly. As a research university, UCB is subject to the political whims of Uncle Sugar. When the granola-and-Birkenstock crowd gets too rowdy and
makes bad publicity, well kids, its an election year after all...

this is entirely reasonable. People tend not to realize that the relationship between the states and the federal government is a two way thing. The
Federal Government gives the states support and protection and in return the states give the Federal Government support in the form of tax money and
allows federal institutions to exercise the authority that has been legally given to them.
Trying to kick out the US armed forces, in any shape or form, is paramount to insurrection. Berkley is lucky Bush isn't trying to bring his
Insurrection Act powers into force.

Sounds like another case of - You are only free if you agree.
In your case, I would say it is Berkeley and YOU who thinks someone should be allowed Constitutional protection and freedom if they agree with you.
What Berkeley has done is violate the US Constitution, specifically the Equal Protection Clause. In giving Code Pink a special permit, and a special
parking place, what Berkeley has done is say that Code Pink's "speech" is more valuable than anyone else who would like to demonstrate at the
recruiting office, either pro or con. They gave Code Pink special-status and extra-ordinary rights because they agree with Code Pink's "speech,"
things they have not allowed other groups, specifically those who may support the Marines.
You know, you're free only if you agree.
Like how I turned that around?
