Navy Intercepts Russian Bombers

ap.google.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that U.S. fighter planes intercepted two Russian bombers flying unusually close to an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific during the weekend.

A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 buzzed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 50 nautical miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.

The Saturday incident, which never escalated beyond the flyover, comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over U.S. plans for a missile defense system based in Poland and the Czech Republic.

In the Pacific... Wasn't this over the disputed Japanese islands? Apparently it flew 650Km south of Tokyo, with Japan scrambling 22 jets to escort it out of the area. Japan lodged an official complaint to the Russian embassy.

I think that a lot of bad stuff will happen this year, upto and including the colliding of the different sides aircraft.

Certanly some sort of millertary action will occur although i dont think it will go nuclear. It seems to me that Russia is saying to the world "Hey there guys we are back and we are flexing our mussels".

Talking to a few russian friends, they seem to think that perhaps there might be a small air and ground war that won't leave Europe ie not a Global war/World War.

I think that we have to monitor this situation very carefully.

Perhaps given that this is a currant event and is going to stay this way, this thread can be kept going and be used to post incidents like this.

Also using Windows live local and Google Mpas/Earth can an estimate be done of conventional armed forces for the us and russia?

Russia once again talks one thing and does another, at least we can see them too bad for them than they can't see us.

The Russians are reminding us that they aren't toothless, and that they aren't happy about our little encirclement campaign in Eastern Europe and Asia...

Corner a bear and it's going to start getting disagreeable.

That's simply a fact of nature.

200ft? Tu-95? Thats ....em.... rude.

Russia stated many times that they want to be a superpower again, and i guess that's how they prove it. Not sure that their orders were
200ft fly over, probably enthusiastic pilots made this call by themself.
I believe that it is Russia's way to show it's annoyance by Kosovo and Chezh/Polish affairs, so it hopefully will not escalate to B-2s 100ft fly - over of some Russian target.

Is there any country left that Bush and his band of misfits haven't ruined our relations with? No doubt they're rubbing their hands together at this incident because Russia has oil.

If they had any diplomatic skill at all, they could settle the missile defense thing without escalating it into another war.

We're going to have to revive the plans for nuclear bomb shelters for Cold (hot) War III.

Bush is a disaster 24/7.

The Russians must have some awesome stealth to be able to fly over the USS Nimitz at 2000ft, unstopped.

I'm suprised that they got inside the carriers "bubble".

The group commanders got some balls letting them get in close, but then again, this is peacetime

Loaded with nukes, what else can the US do? Shoot down a nuke laden bomber and then listen to the world and russians bitch and moan about the loss of life, possible war starter, and nuclear contamination?

Our relations with Russia have been deteriorating ever since Bush got in office. Condi Rice is a cold war era Russia scholar, and she and her cohort can't give up on the idea of Russia as the big bad enemy.

Another part of the problem is that elements in BOTH countries can't give up on the idea of the cold war - they resist improved relations and can't learn to trust the other.

In combination with the Bush Administration total incompetence at diplomacy, it's a disaster for relations.
