moon/mars names

Topic started on 15-2-2004 @ 06:20 PM by Amorymeltzer

hey, anyone no the lowdown on the mission names for the upcoming missions? i dunno how early they pick em out, but im just curious. a friend of mine suggested 'Genesis', but i think that for what well do when we start to live on mars. 'Ares' works, too obvious, but hey, y not? my favorite tho, for the first manned mission, definitely should be named "Marathon"

the name the missions by the capsule, and the capsule by something in space...

mercury: first planet, one man
gemini: constellation (they are twins), two men
apollo: moon god, going to the moon, three men

mars missions would probably be something like...
mars: for the roman god of war
ares: for the greek god of war

probably ares though, since there were already probes sent to mars with the name mars. i have no idea though, just guessing

You know what would be cool? If some random person go to name it, like that one kid got to name the rovers. I hope I get to name it. That would rock steady.

The cynic in me says "Beat the Chinese to the helium-3"

or possibly "Gain some points in the next election and take the attention away from the money hemorrhaging war" (please, feel free to ignore my personal opinions)

It will be interesting to hear what they call it. I'd love them to call it Apollo again.

I think they will call it "Discovery" from the presidents policy entitled "A Renewed Spirit of Discovery" which outlined his wishes.

This page has some information about the presidents charter.

Correction:
Artemis was the goddess of the moon and the hunt
Apollo was the God of the sun and light.
