US investigators are urging the FAA to pass long-delayed directives to fit redesigned windshield-heating systems on Boeing aircraft after the
latest in a series of smoke and fire incidents resulted in an American Airlines Boeing 757 windshield’s shattering in flight.
The first officer`s windscreen heater caught fire and shattered the glass and smoke filled the cockpit - the worrything is that this should have been
dealt with 4 years ago :O
I was looking just a few hours ago at a port side 707 cockpit window that had a failure in its heater element. You could clearly see where the heater
element had over heated and the end result was that the inch thick laminate cracked into dozens of pieces from the cold shock and airframe stresses
upon landing. Seems this problem may be much older than some would think as the window I was looking at was an instructional article that cracked
quite some years ago.
