the red army would'ev been ripped an new one by UFO's! and im pretty sure the rest of russia would not exist today if that happened

This sounds to me like a scapegoat for the performance of the Russian military. Though there have been reports of UFO's during war times, Foo Fighters in WW2 for example, however this just sounds like an excuse to me.
