"I'll be president of Europe if you give me the power" - Blair

politics.guardian.co.uk

Tony Blair has been holding discussions with some of his oldest allies on how he could mount a campaign later this year to become full-time president of the EU council, the prestigious new job characterised as "president of Europe". Blair, currently the Middle East envoy for the US, Russia, EU and the UN, has told friends he has made no final decision, but is increasingly willing to put himself forward for the job if it comes with real powers to intervene in defence and trade affairs.

Yeah just what Europe needs, a President!

I'm rather confused here. He seems to think that being Prime Minister for Britain is enough qualification for running an entire continent.

He must be smoking some gooooood stuff.

His buddy Sarkozy seems to have no problem with Blair as EU Council President. Here they are slapping five...Or holding hands. I can't be sure if they're married or just really good friends.

Blair, who is being actively promoted by the French president Nicolas Sarkozy, recognises he would need to abandon his well-paid, private sector jobs if he won. His wife Cherie - often portrayed as seeking ever more wealth and well-paid consultancies for her husband - is understood to be supportive of him accepting the job.

He's willing to give up his bank position for the dictatorship of the European continent.

What a great guy! I can't believe he's so kind. May I fill your position Mr. Blair and run the company into the ground and rake into unseen profits as CEO?

I'm great for the job. I was recently head of a military junta in an unnamed 3rd world country and oversaw the massacre of hundreds of innocents.

That's the prerequisites for leading a multinational corporation, right?

Or was that the World Bank? I forgot, that was Wolfowitz...

If it wasn't blatantly obvious, I am a rather sarcastic character
.

The president of the European council of ministers is a post created under the Lisbon treaty. The president will be the permanent chair of the council of ministers, Europe's chief decision-making body.

I knew the EU was a bad idea, glad I don't live in Europe. The NAU was on the table, but thank God the people aren't stupid enough to vote for such a pact.

We don't need any more socialist unions in the world, one is bad enough.

Blair himself is still doubtful that the role of council president will become a powerful job, saying he senses that even pro-Europeans might recoil from ceding power from the nation state.

No Mr. Blair, I'm pretty sure you'll have a ridiculous amount of power and access to Interpol's intelligence for your buddies on Wall Street and elsewhere...More cash to line your pockets, yay!

With most countries currently focused on ratifying the Lisbon treaty through their national parliaments, decisions on the powers of the full-time president are unlikely to be made until the second half of the year.

I hope the rest of Europe will deny the Lisbon treaty or at least grant the EU Council President severely limited powers.

We don't need two Bushies in the world now do we? That is, unless you're into that sort of love-hate relationship with your 'fearless leader.'

Apart from Blair, two other candidates most often mentioned are the former Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, promoted by Germany, and the current Luxembourg prime minister, Jean-Claude Juncker.

I would love to see either one of these two nominated instead of the Bush-puppet Blair. He's already caused enough havoc in the world and he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the seat of power...

Blair, or Bliar as he has come to be known, is a very dangerous individual. An international criminal who will stop at nothing to forge a legacy for himself.. no matter how many die in the process.

Now we are dealing with his robotic apprentice come PM, who isn't any better at all. The UK has been used and abused by Blairites for too long now. 10 years and counting.

life can be so beautiful... why do these people have to keep making it so grim? why do they want to ruin everyone's life? [SNIP]

this is sad. i do hope that europe mass protests if this happens.

it is sick that the people in europe are not being asked of their opinions on this. this is really [...] sick.

Blair is obsessed with big brother, and do we get to vote to president of europe, or is he just given the title.

I wonder what the light tells him this morning to do for the rest of us, to bring about the scummy things, he wants to bring in.

Yep, if Bliar becomes president of EU, I'll resign.

I mean, he could be criminal, but he could also be so magnificently manipulatable person that he even doesn't know how he possible has done anything wrong. In either case, I don't want his type being leader of anyone or anything!

Edit: And European Union doesn't need a president.

Blair is the US's obedient lapdog and cannot be awarded a role in US-European trade disputes, where he will most likely turn out a traitor to the EU's interests.

An update on "Bliar"

Diplomats say Blair unlikely to get EU Presidency

Oh damn, his attempt at power is over. Too bad Tony...I was rooting for you, really.

Tony Blair is unlikely to be the first president of the European Union, EU diplomats and politicians say.

Insiders say Blair has little chance because Britain is too disconnected from the EU mainstream, and he remains too divisive a figure because of his enthusiastic support for the U.S.-led war in Iraq which split Europe in 2003.

"Tony Blair? Forget it," said one EU ambassador, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with diplomatic etiquette.

The EU is basing their judgment on the UK in general, not Blair as a total jackass. I guess the Iraq war didn't really help him that much either.

I am happy to see he won't be the President, but I am not so happy to see that the EU Council President position is moving forward.

I fear for your lives in Europe. Good luck with that dictator thing. I'm sure it'll work out great.

In these pathological liars and power-monger's dream-world, Blair will be appointed EU prez, and dumbya the Prez of the planet. These people are truly disturbed and dangerous.

Let's face it, we pretty much live in a dictatorship - bliars henchman, prudence has decided he will cut the debate time for the eu treaty to 12 days instead of the promised 25.
This is because he wants to force it through.
This is because he didn't give us the referendum he promised even though nearly all european ministers say the treaty is pretty much the same as the defeated constitution.

And all this is because he cooked up a deal with bliar so that he could become prime minister while bliar pursued his personal power agenda.

If you both read the new article I posted, you would have read that Blair's chances have been cut short.

He will most likely not be nominated EU Council President.

The other options may be just as bad, but Blair himself will not be leading the EU anytime soon...Maybe next election day eh
. If you're lucky

Yeah, I read it too, that's why I stated "in their dream world". I'm glad that people outside of these power-monger's had enough sense to deny him. These people are the biggest threat to world peace on this earth right now.

Words fail me, this man and his gravy train riding antics are just pathetic.

We do not need a European president, and we certainly do not need Blair as that unsustainable undemocratic figurehead either
