Twenty people have died from this infectious disease, Sounds strange that a strain of bird flu could cross over to humans. This would be a perfect
terror weapon; the birds dont recognize national boundaries or boarders. Nor could anyone prove who released them. They could simply fly anywhere
spreading, infecting and multiplying the strain.
Well, it seems been a huge leap in the mortality rate since this virus was seen in humans in 1997 in Hong Kong. Back then 6 people died, 18 confirmed
infections. At present, there have been 27 confirmed infections with 20 people dying....(do the math) Though, that particular article doesn't mention
confirmed infections, only deaths.
"Bird flu, in fact, is considered a potential bio-weapon because it is extremely contagious and lethal to all bird secies. It can cause heavy dollar
losses as many birds die and more are culled, while trade in poultry products is disrupted.
Most of all, the virus mutates easily, with 15 sub-types already existing. Since there aren't vaccines against every sub-type, some vaccinated birds
may still become infected by another variant, and infect other birds."
