Qatar to build Massive Solar-powered Complex

www.reuters.com

DUBAI (Reuters) - Qatar is considering building one of the world's largest solar power complexes to help meet demand, which could increase four-fold over the next 30 years, the Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) reported.

Gulf Arab states have about 30 percent of the world's oil reserves and 8 percent of its gas, but an economic boom spurred by record crude prices is driving demand for power and water so rapidly that many are considering turning to alternative energies including nuclear.

Is it just me, or does everyone besides us seem to be getting with the program of alternate power sources? This is the second ME oil-rich company considering making a huge, alternative fuel-ran structure. It's almost kind of ironic that the source of our disgustingly high fuel is looking to using a different form of energy than the one they're making untold fortunes on selling...Or maybe not? lol

No, we are not alone.

The fact that the rest of the world is bypassing the US in alternative energy sources should be a wake up call, as much as Pearl Harbor was a wake up call. With leadership not tied to the oil industry, perhaps the US will once again reawaken as the sleeping giant. Let's hope this time we will have a terrible resolve to diversify our energy sources.

You know, Dimensional, an act small but of great significance, was Reagan's removal of the White House solar panels, symbolically signaling an end to any oil crisis and a return to energy from oil. The US during the 1970's oil crisis (to us) did try to wean itself off of petroleum through conservation and alternative energy sources. The US has had extremely limited solar power for decades.

BTW Jimmy Carter was made to look like a fool and remembered as the worst POTUS. This Naval Academy graduate was promoted by his critics as a "peanut farmer". But it was under this President's watch, that we tried to be more independent of oil.
