My buddy list is telling me that all of my buddies are offline when they're not. Is it broken, or am I?

I never quite understood the use of a buddy list ... what do you use it for?? It's such a useless feature...

well, ive been 'adopted' and i always u2u him for help. it would be nice to see him online on my buddy list without going to have to find a place he's posted to see if he's online or not.
