Hey SpaceBits you really trouble me, your attitude to minorities is just a little frightening, if you happened to be a police officer and I happened to be gay well I wouldn't feel very comfortable being held in custody by you, about as comfortable as I would if I was held in custody by the police officers in the video in fact. I'd feel the same if I were jewish or anything other than what you are.

I'm not anything and I Love and respect all people, and no i'm not a cop, if i was i would still speak out about those who do unjust things to humans... but then i'm not sure what your talking about... please clearify.

Does every dangerous criminal get stripped searched? Does every drunken slob or deranged person stripped searched and left for hours naked?

Normally a trained female cop will search without the need to remove all clothing. The one and ONLY reason would be a full body cavity search, and unless you are going to prison (not jail) or you are smuggling there really isn’t too many reasons to do it.

You would think after the initial search with nothing found and the removal of items such as belts and shoes there really is no further need other than to put them in a holding cell. They are closely watched too.

I also have an issue that males were helping and it looked to being done in a fairly commonly used area. The police have reached the point that everyone is treated as some long term dangerous criminal and take a housewife and treat them as if they have a rap sheet a mile long who must be under full restraints and stripped for safety.

It is like a sick never ending cycle of ever increasing force. First you take a person who has never been to a jail in their life or even in the back of a cruiser and that makes them rather upset. Then you add a cop(s) who tell that person to stop being upset or force will be used to make them stop which makes the totally fearful person even worst. This all drives the person into a emotional state of not fully cooperating, and the cop just continues to up the force that was not working in the first place due to the induced incoherence the whole situation has caused. Then the cops after all said and done just state “hey we were doing our jobs because she didn’t cooperate”.

Is there anytime that the cops could just try a different approach, or are they stovepipped into this ever increasing force method?

I am going to rise to your challenge, SpaceBits, because this question has haunted me all night.

What possible justification might there be?

If the woman was violent, perhaps scratched or bit the officers (perhaps seriously) or if she had tried to club or stab an officer. If she had HIV and had scratched and spit at an officer...

AND/OR, if she was screaming about how she was going to commit suicide, and had actually made an attempt to hurt herself, by hitting herself or trying to slash herself with a pen or the sharp edge of a desk or chair...

AND/OR, if she is a repeat offender and has done any of the above things, perhaps more than once, perhaps having a long history of irrational and bloody violence against others and herself.

I actually think the above senarios are unlikely. Please don't get me wrong here -- I think the MOST LIKELY senario is she was lippy to the police and they decided they were going to humiliate her in retailiation.

I just want to point out that nobody here knows the full story. I have a Google News Alert setup on this, and I will be watching for further news. We haven't seen the last of this, I think. I am open to further explanation. She will have her day in court.

Another news report. This contains more information about the build up before Hope was arrested. It doesn't sound very good for the officers.

Couple sues over Stark County incident

The narrative of court documents said that on Oct. 20, 2006 Hope Steffey was allegedly assaulted by another woman on Weimer Dr. S.E. and Gurlea responded, questioned Steffey and asked for identification and she “mistakenly” produced the driver’s license of her dead sister, which she kept as a personal memento.

She immediately recognized her mistake and asked for it back, but Gurlea allegedly refused.

Documents say she “begged” for the return of her license but it wasn’t returned.

The deputy then ran a computer check of the right license and Steffey’s cousin noticed a bald spot on her head from the assault.

The cousin “reminded” the deputy that Steffey was the victim while advising Steffey of the hair loss which made her visibly upset.

The documents alleged Gurlea failed to call for medical assistance despite knowledge Steffey was injured.

Gurlea the, documents allege, warned Steffey to calm down and Steffey replied she was upset and could exercise her freedom of speech and her cousin again attempted to remind the deputy that Steffey was the victim and she had been knocked unconscious by the assailant.

The deputy allegedly refused to acknowledge her injuries.

Court documents said that after searching Steffey’s car, he turned to the two and questioned the cousin when Steffey asked for her sister’s license back.

Gurlea allegedly turned angrily and responded “shut up about your dead sister.”

Steffey pointed her finger at her sister’s license in the deputy’s pocket and said, “she was here, she was someone” and Gurlea allegedly, suddenly exploded into a rage and allegedly slammed her face into his cruiser breaking a tooth, and pinning her against the cruiser, allegedly saying, “are you going to stop?”

The documents allege Gurlea then threw her to the ground causing cuts and bruises and with the weight of his body on her she could not breathe.

Steffey was then handcuffed and told to sit in the cruiser.

So, where'd the video come from? It's hard for me to believe the PD turned it over to her husband.

According to the above article I just linked to, they didn't.

The 16-page complaint notes in the fifth claim for relief that the sheriff produced thousands of pages of requested records, but “specifically failed to produce the videotape of the strip search.”

It added, “The available public records indicate the videotape camera that would have captured the incident was functioning.”

Since the October filing, Cleveland television Channel 3 WKYC obtained and posted a video clip of the strip search at:
www.wkyc.com...

The Cleveland station featured the incident on its Thursday night news program and also was to air a second part Friday night.

So, more detail would be good, of course, but it sounds like the police department was deliberately trying to hide their tracks, and the video only surfaced after the television media got involved. Remember, the incident itself happened fifteen months ago, the court filing was in October and it has only been in the past few weeks that the video has become available.

I actually grew up in that area and I can tell you first hand that there is a good percentage of police officers up there who suck. I know because I have friends who are police officers in that area and they will tell you the same thing. Those officers have some horror stories of the types of men who wear a badge in the Stark County Area. You can find all types of stories from this one small county on the Internet.

Former Canton police officer is charged with three counts of aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, gross abuse of a corpse and endangering children.
www.cantonrep.com...

en.wikipedia.org...

Teen girls say they were strip-searched, harassed at juvy detention center
www.wickedlocal.com...

Officer Pam Denczak Henderhan has accused Lt. Bruce Wilson of stealing items from her vehicle.
www.cantonrep.com...

Police Beat up Teen but will not release their video.
www.cantonrep.com...

Just in the past few years there have been many canton area police officers arrested for breaking into home, stealing from people and raping women. There seems to be a bit of a mafia mentality running through that system with some officers.

I found this site called Bad Cops that records all the criminal convictions of police officers. Pretty stunning stuff. www.badcopnews.com...

I beg to differ. Harper is about as much a breath of well needed fresh air in the Canadian political scene since Diefenbaker or Pearson.

Please check your partisan political BS at the door, it is unbecoming and un-Canadian.

OK lets say she did all of those things. the cops do not have the right to break the laws as they see fit. They are sworn to protect and serve the american public. So she naked is that going to stop here from killing herself? Does anythink that because she's naked that she is safe from herself or that now the police are safe because she's naked. NO!

I can think of many ways to kill myself in a 6x6 cell with no clothes on... like jumping as high in the air as possible or jump off the bed and land on your head. Or snap your own neck with your own hands. Stick your head between the jail bars and jump up and twist in the air... ect.

Nope the only reasone for the cops to do this is to instill fear into the general population.

They want civil unrest so they can issue Martial Law and have there police state.... "To Protect and Serve" should read "To Terroris and Dominate"

Then you know nothing of Steven Harper or the Canadian Politics, and maybe it is you that needs to do some research on the matter.

I have also spent time in Akron / Canton Ohio, and I concur 100%. There is something perverse about that area. There is a lot of violence, drug activity, unemployment. The people's attitudes are different.

I don't understand why, because the city itself is really kind of charming as you drive through it. The people you meet are friendly and intelligent.

But there is some sort of underlying subtext to the area that gives me the chills. It doesn't seem like heartland USA (although it is often called that.) That is why I think the most likely senario here is horrific abuse of police authority (as opposed to any other explanation.)
