Iraq ready for "final" battle with al Qaeda: PM

www.reuters.com

Iraqi security forces have begun a "decisive" final offensive against al Qaeda in Iraq to push the Sunni Islamist militants out of their last major stronghold in the north, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Friday.
U.S. military commanders say al Qaeda, blamed for most big bombings in Iraq, has regrouped in the northern provinces after being squeezed out of western Anbar province and from around Baghdad during security crackdowns last year.

Maybe someone should have told the Iraqis about the CIA's support of this terrorist organization. They may want to forget about signing that military contract forcing us to stay till at least 2012. Maybe some folks want to do research before denying our connections to Al Qaeda. Thanks.

So...Just two days ago the US was accused of being the largest terror producer. Now the Iraqis are saying they're fighting (other) terrorists in Mosul.

Is there a possible overlap?

"We have set up an operations room in Nineveh to complete the final battle with al Qaeda along with guerrillas and members of the previous regime," Maliki said, referring to other Sunni militants the Shi'ite-led government says remain loyal to former leader Saddam Hussein.

The defense is centered on Nineveh, an old capital of the Assyrian Empire. I think it is no coincidence the 'last stand' of the Iraqi military will be here. This is a very bloody region, known for the warfare lasting thousands of years.

More blood will be shed before the day is out.

It's hard for me to believe that THEY believe that this will be their "FINAL" battle with al Qaeda.

Do they think that after they push them out of Mosul that al Quada will just disappear?

I think not!

Do you know that Iraq in December signed deal worth 230 million Euros of buying weapons? Guess what country will supply Iraqi army?

So... does this mean Bush is going to stand on another aircraft carrier and tell everyone they won... again?

Nah, I can't see Al-Q getting forced out of Iraq with one push. The US green zone is pretty damn tiny IMO, they can't accurately gauge where the Al-Q members are, let alone herd them into one area for a final battle.

"Are you a member of Al-Q?"
"Yes"
"Okay, step this way please, travel 30K down that road, the final battle is scheduled for 08:00"
"Oh, thankyou very much"

Come ON!

At least we'll have a new "Victory Speech Comedy Hour" to entertain us.
