The leak of the Microsoft Source code leak has been traced back to its source in Redmond. But no its not Microsoft that allowed the leak as once thought it was Mainsoft a long time Microsoft Partner.

References to Mainsoft can be found throughout the source code. The source code was pulled off of a Linux machine that the company used for development purposes. The code in question is actually Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 that the company licensed from Microsoft in order to incorporate a native Unix enviroment for its product.

Beta News

Because Mainsoft used only select portions of the Windows source for MainWin, Microsoft may find itself more worried about the egg on its face than possible exposure of its flagship operating system; Windows 2000 served as the foundation for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

It is not clear at this point how the three and a half year-old source code escaped Mainsoft.

The leaked code contained 30,915 files representing only a small portion of the total source code helping to alleviate some of the fears of a disaster.

Good! I'm glad the source code leaked out! It gives you more control over your operating system!

Yeah, the disaster isint in all of 2k being release not but in that Microsoft yet again fails to secure things properly. Unfortunately the weak link was a Linux machine, and you can bet that MS will claim it was all the fault of the evil open source operating system, and not theirs for having admins who cant do their job right.
