UK Astronomers to lose access to 2 of the worlds finest telescopes

news.bbc.co.uk

UK astronomers will lose access to two of the world's finest telescopes in February, as administrators look to plug an £80m hole in their finances.

Observation programmes on the 8.1m telescopes of the Gemini organisation will end abruptly because Britain is cancelling its subscription.

It means UK astronomers can no longer view the Northern Hemisphere sky with the largest class of telescope.

Researchers say they are aghast at the administrators' decision.

"To withdraw from the state-of-the-art Gemini facilities leaves the UK ground-based astronomy strategy in disarray - some would say deliberately sabotaged," said Professor Paul Crowther from Sheffield University.

Hi all just noticed this on the BBC website, this sounds very unhealthy to have the blindfolds put on to the UK scientists, the point that Professor Paul Crowther from Sheffield University mentions that it was 'deliberately sabotaged' warrants investigation. What do you think these scientists are being prevented from looking at?

Thoughts please?

its just one big cosmetic surgery disaster.

i could go on forever, its so bad.

all this when they give £55billion in taxpayers money to subsidise one bank who were entirely responsible for thier own downfall!!!

Maybe they dont want them seeing the meteor(s) ? If it was a huge threat someone was trying to cover . (even if its the 2029 one) This would be a good start.
