REAL ID: You will need it to use the Internet

Topic started on 25-1-2008 @ 10:06 AM by Golack

I would like to present the case that REAL ID may include a plan for government control of the internet.

I was watching the Republican debate last night and something Rudolph Giuliani said scared the crap out of me. This guy is the biggest pusher of REAL ID out of any candidate. He was talking about how a 'tamper proof id card' would help limit illegal immigration.

Just watch this part of the debate between 6:25 and 8:00 minutes

YouTube Link

Thats right, he said:

And then if you've got the tamper-proof ID card, you'd be allowed to work, pay taxes, get online,

Entire Transcript
And to the very patient Paul Tash we go, in the front row, from the St. Petersburg Times. Paul?

MR. TASH: Mayor Giuliani, this question to you comes from Marshall Brennan (sp) of St. Petersburg.

"Your immigration plan calls for all immigrants to learn English to gain citizenship. So why is your campaign airing an ad in Spanish?" (Laughter.)

MR. GIULIANI: (Laughs.) The reality is I believe that America is a country that is built around the English language. If you want to become a citizen, you should demonstrate your facility with English. If you know other languages, that is wonderful. That's a wonderful thing. And if we have substantial portions of populations that know other languages, I'm very comfortable trying to reach them in both English and in Spanish.

The core of my plan on immigration is to stop illegal immigration at the border with a border stat system, with technology, with an increased Border Patrol. I believe we can stop illegal immigration if we stop it right at the border.

And then we should develop a tamper-proof ID card so that people who want to come into the United States should be allowed to do that. We need to teach new behavior. The new behavior is, if you want to come into the United States, you have to identify yourself -- which, after all, makes the United States like every other country, right?

You can't get into most countries without identifying yourself. And then if you've got the tamper-proof ID card, you'd be allowed to work, pay taxes, get online, become a citizen, follow the rules, but then at the end of the line, you'd have to be able to read, write and speak English.

If you speak a second language or a third language or a fourth language, I think that's great for America. I think America has to be a country that has facility with more languages, given the global economy we live in. And I think we can be very comfortable with that, but the focus has to be on being able to read, write and speak English if you want to be a citizen.

WAIT A MINUTE, What does having a national ID have to do with the internet and getting online?

Well these people have been trying to control the internet for a long time. What better way to track you than requiring you stick your ID in a card reader before logging on.

This system is already in place in the US military. You MUST have a CAC card to access the internet on any military installation.

This is what a CAC card looks like

Notice the smart card chip on the lower half.

Here is a CAC card reader

This is an extremely simple and cheap USB device they could easily hand out when you receive your ID.

So what does all this mean?

Well if we look at the military, the system is already in place for our service men and women. They have obviously been testing it on them and refining it for a while. I think under the guise of national security or child pornography (etc) they will require all people to have a REAL ID RFID card and something similar to a CAC card reader to access the internet. Everything you do will be logged onto your ID card file.

I hope that uneducated monster doesnt make it into any branch of

government anytime soon.

He's potentially more dangerous than George.

The problem is REAL ID is being pushed on us even if Giuliani doesn't make it into office. I think he may have let the cat out of the bag so to speak by revealing its true purpose. Internet Control

Tamper Proof ID Cards ???

The way I see it, that's a huge contradiction. I can go
downtown and find a Satellite Dish installer who can get
me a free card to watch any sat channel as long as I give
him a hundred dollar bill for his trouble. There is a way
to get around just about everything. You could get around
this card as well, illegally of course. So really it solves nothing
in the end. The system of control is bypassed with a fake
or a programmed card. I see a new illegal business evolving.

As far as the idea of the card, I'm in total disagreement
with it as Ghouliani speaks of this card as having several
different applications. To me that means, CONTROL!!!
As far as ID's go, we already have means of ID:

Social Security Card
Driver's License
Passport
Insurance Card
Credit Card
Debit card
Library Card
Movie Club Membership Card
etc.....

I'm sick to death of cards ......

just what I need ..... another darn card to bulge my wallet
even further which makes no sense at all. I already got more
cards in my wallet than anything else. Before you know it
we'll all be a walking encyclopedia of information. And you
can be me, just by stealing it or if I accidentally lose it.

Rudy !!!! Kiss my bohinkus !!!! I'm not getting another card.
And if you make me, well I'll just buy one illegally and be done
with it. The control has got to stop. Big brother has finally
decided they know what's better for me than I do.

Wait a minute here! All the information I have read says that the new ID cards are for people born after 1964. How would this work for people born before that?

WONDERFUL!!! I hope to GOD that they are stupid enough to require Americans to use this card to access the internet! Every hacker from here to Mars will be working on a way to subvert this thing and demonstrate that not only is it not tamper-proof, but is hackable beyond any definition imaginable! For a few bucks you'll be able to buy a fully tampered-with and hacked card and use it over and over and over again.

I guarantee it and look forward to it. The stupidity of these people knows no bounds and their ability to underestimate the intelligence and cleverness of the underground will be their achilles heel. Bring it!

I have an interesting question to pose to you now that you've brought this illegal ID market up.

I think it is almost widely accepted here that the CIA is and has been behind illegal drug trafficking for years. Do you believe that, should it ever come to this, that this would be their next step? In other words, would we really be escaping the problem of them wanting to control us? or would we be joining the problem anyway, but only by a different means (an "illegal" one in which the CIA has its grubby greedy fingers on)

Jeez, and I was busy worrying about a certain economics question asked of one of the front runners. I wrote a blog post about the debate, provided a link to the subject matter questioned and followed up with a question about some shorts prior to 9/11 which I'd post here but I'm new, don't want to self-promote, and the link I posted to the Executive Order doesn't seem to work anymore.

Gimme my real id card and a reader.
I'll have the bugger hacked in a week, and I don't give a damn what crypto you wish to use, they will be dumb enough to use some portion of your name or number in the program.
If all else fails, a couple seconds in the microwave will fix it permanantly.

I forsee a large market in forged or stolen cards.
Pity. As someone who has had an identity stolen, it's quite a bugger getting it back and repaired.
