Knives and the likes

Alright, so I'm looking for a knife, only problem is that I don't know what I'm looking for and I don't know what to tell what's a good knife or not.

I was wondering if anyone had an indepth understanding of Knife hardness and materials. Just everything I need to know when looking for a knife that will last a long time, be strong, while sharp at the same time.

Any help is appreciated.

What will you be using the knife for?

EDC (every day carry), hunting, camping, protection?

Well survival, cutting rocks, leather hide, and hunting, you know the uses a soldier would need it for.

If it were me I'd feel pretty darn good if I had a Gerber LMF II Infantry fixed blade with me...as a soldier or in a survival situation. Heck of a knife....

Hmm, a sporting goods store close to me sells that knife and the Seal Pup. I wasn't sure if the LMF was a good knife or not so I never payed it much attention.

Would that be a diamond edged rock cutting knife? Or possibly a plasma cutter?

I believe one of the aspects of a military knife was the ability to cut rock, or so I read somewhere.

But Tungsten carbide knives, cheaper than diamond bits, can cut rock and are almost as hard as diamonds.
