Thoughts seem to exist and come to us as random as the events of our life. Evidence may suggest that thoughts are not completely random, but they are random, in the sense that our environment triggers our thoughts, and our thoughts, react to the environment. Perhaps they come from an all knowing machine telling us what to think as our eyes perceive our environment? What makes us able to think?

It's a lot to do with free will that makes us able to think
. We can choose what to think either purely by will or by other factors such as environment, how we were raised, things we're led to believe etc.

How would scientists be able to prove that free will exists? How do we know if we were given free will by a god or an alien or through evolution? How would we be able to prove that free will exists?
