How is that a bad idea!!!!!!

In fact, I think it is a wonderful idea....

The only problem I would see is the increase in the work load of TheVagabond, but if we could get another Moderator to help here in the debate forum, one with TheVagabond's commitment, I think a loser bracket is something we should consider....

I see many debaters frustrated after losing because they are forced to sit on the side-lines while others debate...

What does everyone else think about a losers debate bracket?

A fabulous idea...though I think that a bit of re-wording is in order...

We would definitely have to consider the workload.

I love the idea. A runner up debate tournament of sorts. A second chance if you will. I am all for this idea

as each round progresses the ones that don't make it can opt to be put into the next phase of the runner up debate tournament thus having a second chance at winning a runner up tourny pennant.

or one of these:

I would love to see something like this, and agreed; the term "loser" debates is stupid, but I'm not know for my eloquence....

I just U2Ued MS with an idea....

Maybe it is just my opinion, but I have found this forum to be the single most enjoyable, challenging section of ATS....

What issue in todays world will not benefit from a debate by two qualified intellects?

I can foresee a day when topics are assigned by the Admin. in order to facilitate or reconcile conflicts all over the board...

Any reason that those that "didn't win", much nicer term, could go into a "consolation" round?

Btw, I would help out, the Debate forum is my fav. but I'm stretched pretty thin right now.

Maybe a "runners-up match", a way to make some points, outside of the tournaments..., we, after all need to practice.

It doesn't even need to be in a tournament format, unless we get alot of participation.

Ok points or no points, I have seen some of the "mistakes" I made in my round 1 debate. I would love the chances to refine my debate skills, in some kind of competitive situation.

Really, wouldn't it be cool to have more types of debate tournaments here on ATS, but I agree it would not be fair to have the work load squarely on one guys shoulders.

See????

I think that is a wonderful idea....

Just my opinion now, but...

Perhaps the reason some get interested and then fade off is the time between debates... Let's face it, not everyone is forthcoming and confident enough to "make a challenge" especially to a seasoned vet of the forum. So these members, if they lose, must sit for long periods of time and read only, not being involved or challenged...

A consolation round, with points, maybe diminished, but still points, would bring everyone back into the action a lot faster....

Definitely a great idea and one that The Vagabond has been directed towards...

In the meantime...don't forget Challenge Matches!!!

I thought round 2 was going to start today. I can't wait to get into the frey so to speak.

I am just impatient lately.

and just for saber rattling sake, MemoryShock I am going to read Mad Magazine while writing my part of this debate.

I think a consolation debate tourney would be awesome. Keep anyone that signed up involved instead of the long breaks that you face if you lose. Of course, as Memoryshock said, there is always challenge matches.

I would offer my services on a part time basis to help Vagabond with the forum. The debate forum is my favorite forum on ATS and I would not mind helping.

For the record, I am open to debate with anyone who so desires between tourney's. I am not picky about topics or sides. My inbox is always open

What did I ever do to deserve that topic??? Lol. Whatever it is I am SORRY and I will NEVER do it AGAIN.

I sure am glad the debates seem to be delayed, I am scraping the bottom of the barrel for this one.

You think that's bad trying to argue for more gun control on a board that's 66% American.

Sorry guys, my glasses broke so I spent the better part of my dedicated ATS time at Lenscrafters.

Technically I still have 15 minutes to get the threads up "on time"- we'll see if I'm fast enough to get all the threads properly date-stamped.

Also a secondary bracket is a great idea, but since almost all of the eliminations from round 1 were by Disqualification, it wouldn't be much of a tourney until the next round is complete.

So let's plan on starting the secondary bracket after round 2. If everyone participates we won't have a perfect square, so we'll have to operate round-robin, which is just as well. 3 rounds like that coinciding with the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds of the tourney, and whoever has the best record at the end is the winner from the secondary bracket.

To add to that idea, in round 5 I want to have more than just a championship match- I want to match the fighters eliminated in round 4 against eachother so that we have an ordered "top 4" for the tournament rather than just a champion and runner-up.

Threads are up. The 24 hour time limit began at 12:30AM that gives you all day today to make your openings or post an extention notice. You should all know your matches and where to find them.

Just wanted to remind everyone of something, since a question about topic has come up. While we promote the willingness to challenge yourself with positions you don't necessarily agree with, there are limits to what fighters are expected to tollerate when it comes to debate topics.

Fighters' Bill of Rights
No fighter may be assigned a position without his or her consent if arguing that position would constitute any of the following:
(1) Blasphemy or another religious offense.
(2) A violation of any law to which the fighter is subject.
(3) A violation of the verifiable rules of any other organization to which the fighter claims membership or affiliation.

No fighter may be assigned a position or topic without his or her consent which would be emotionally traumatic. This includes but is not limited to:
(1) Debate involving any type of abuse to which the fighter, the fighter's loved one, or the fighter's gender, ethnic group, nation, religion, etc has been subject.
(2) Debate involving a painful disability or adverse condition to which the fighter or the fighter's loved one is or has been subject.

No fighter shall lose ranking points as the result of a hardship such as illness or death in the family, natural disaster, etc.

The debate forum staff reserves the right to determine the legitimacy of claims made under this bill of rights, subject to the review of ATS Management.

Rankings have been updated. It's getting awfully crowded at the top.

There are 4 fighters who could theoretically pass me in ranking finally by the end of this tournament. In fact one scenario would allow three of them to do it simultaneously.

By the end of this tournament the 10+ ranks will be pretty full, and there are at least 6 members down in the mid range who I really believe are going to be rocketing up the ladder as time goes on. We've got a very competitive environment growing here.

Yeah, lol. I see your point. Good luck.

And to the Vagabond, the topic does not create a conflict for me based on any of those criteria. So please ignore the slight whine, which is actually coming from a cell phone tower near you.
