Sighting Holloman AFB 12JAN50 (ASTRO:Venus)
This was a five minute sighting by a security guard of an object determined to be Venus, though some information in the file contradicts this determination.

Document date: 1950-01-12
Department: Unknown
Author: Various
Document type: Report
pages: 6

Archivist's Notes: This file is in good condition with all pages legible. The contradiction is on page 4 where it states that there was no observable celestial object in the position of the sighting though the witness describes the object like Venus in appearance.

There is also some strange description of the movement described as erratic at one point.

It could have been Venus but this report helps to show how these reports from witnesses can sometimes contradict themselves and bring a skeptical view of the classification processes used in these reports of the time.

This was not Venus. Venus does not move about erratically across the sky. In fact the sky was apparently overcast with the exception of the northern sky - and Venus doesn't keep company with the Big Dipper.

The investigator went so far as to contact the Research Center at White Sands Proving Ground to find out if the UFO could be something of theirs.
Their response was that they had not "released" anything that would account for this phenomenon.

I note that agent Womack was involved. The agent was heavily involved in reports around this time. He also states that the same person made a report on 06 JAN50 of an object. This was the same date that agent Womack made his own report.

It is also worth noting that the object in this report is described in almost exactly the same terms as agent Womack used in his own report of a UFO; complete with changes in color and erratic movements.

Interesting.
