i have seen that the asteroid will break up in the sky and there will be lots of small chunks falling from the sky, like a rain of hand grenades. it will not crash in the southern hemisphere, but above europe. i hope this will not happen! but we will see that soon.

8 days left.

best regards.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on January 23 and Arecibo observations are
scheduled on January 27-28 and February 1-4.

cool! we'll see pics soon! looking forward to that!
Can we determine that nasa doesn't plan a global catastrophe since they are planning on taking more pics in February? after the asteroid passes...?

There is an explanation below the diagram. Use the arrows under the diagram to advance the date and the movement will show. There are two arrows, one is for frame by frame and the other is the acceleration.

umm and what would they say ? " hey there will be a asteroid impact that might cause world wide catastrophies(SP?) , we cant do anything about so just letting all of you know"

Imagine the panic and the riots as people prepare for the end of the world (even if the asteroid only hits with minimal damage to climate/earth) and try to maintain peace and a stable goverment after that

[edit on 20-1-2008 by Thill]

I think you've been watching too many movies or have fallen for the civil disruption fairytales from the government.

People simple do not panic like that. In fact it has been demonstrated that the best group to cope with a situation is not the army or organised groups but the general public!

Just look at how the public reacted after the terrorist attacks of recent years : New York, Madrid, London. Were thousands of people running through the streets screaming and trampling on each other? NOPE. Were there gangs of muggers and rapists roaming the streets? NOPE. Was there brigades of army personnel organising the rescue and recovery? NOPE.

We had the emergency services doing their bit, we had members of the general public helping their fellow citizen, onlookers and papparazzis with cameras! Oh and in one case a leader of a country reading a book upside down at a nursery school!

echo.jpl.nasa.gov...

I followed the link that was given up above previously somewhere, and found this one. It describes TU24 as the closest approach of any major asteroid until 2027. If this is true, this one could be a tad interesting.

"This object's 1.4-lunar-distance approach on Jan. 29 is the closest for any known Potentially Hazardous Asteroid until 2027"

I don't know about anyone else, but this is becoming to be pretty newsworthy...

If any earth impacting steroid where to be kept secret and this asteroid is talked about on the nasa website then there's clearly nothing to worry about.

I completely agree, see my previous posts, I've been saying that it'll probably pass us by, but it is unique that's the closest approach of any major ones being tracked until 2027.

That's the kind of talk that can get you a visit or on a terror watch list.

Last time I was at the NASA main gate for a public tour security was made clear as we were greeted by a guy with sunglasses civilian clothing and an lightweight folding stock automatic weapon with both hands on his weapon. That's before you even get close to any buildings. You would not make it very far. What are you going to due kill a guard doing his job? You would never get close to anyone else.

NASA facilities are just like a Military base with the exception that many of the guards are not in standard uniforms. With vip visitors, Airforce Launch facilities and the like there is a mixture including secret service and probably others.

Continue to talk stupid - enjoy your new status. Try something stupid - even Rambo wouldn't make it there.

The fact is sometimes the public is better off not knowing the truth, when the truth can create more collateral damage or just destroy your life with the time you have left.

All the answers are always available to those who seek them, don't expect to be spoon fed everything as you've been trained to do all your life.

The examples you are giving show how people react AFTER a catastrophe. I think the scenario is much less attractive when you look at how people would act before a catastrophe when given prior knowledge.

What would you do? Would you want to take care of yourself and your family, or would you ignore your family to help out the complete stranger down the street first? MOST people will look out for numero uno first. They may have the compassion to help out others as well, but I think that is going to be the minority.

Human nature is to want to survive. If we were all given knowledge of our impending doom in a matter of weeks, it would be chaos. People would be hoarding resources to make a feeble attempt at surviving. You can dismiss it, but I think you are wrong. You obviously hold society in a higher regard than I do.

The aftermath would go one of two ways in my opinion. The first is like you say, people coming together and cleaning up the aftermath. Unless of course society is damaged to the point that there is no more structure and no signs of recovery. Then it is every man for himself again. The person that would have volunteered at the local shelter is now holding up your family at gun point to steal your last bit of water so his own family doesn't die.

I think a global catastrophe is just as likely to bring out the worst in society as it is to bring out the best.

Ok take it easy there amigo, t'was only a joke

He was referring to my last post, page 12. I put links to articles from 2003 about how Scientists will not make any announcements if there was any real, inevitable collision of an Asteroid so as to not cause panic and civil unrest.

lol yep I love to watch movies so I probably do watch to manny of them , no idea how that impacts my judgment thou ..

Ahh and You see my friend sadly your example is of no use because nothing can be compared to the major world wide catastrophe scenario ..

I bet you most of my $ that if (and I say if because as I stated I do not belive the meteor will impact earth with any major catasrophes) the media would broadcast a speech in which the gov. tells the public that the asteroid will impact earth with major world wide catastrophies then you would have major riots and panic all over the world .. Why ? And why wasnt there any panic after a terrorist atack ?

Well my friend those are 2 completly different scenarios . In the first you have a major catastrophe that impacts the life of the whole world with earthquakes , major tidal waves , general climate change etc .. so I bet you there will be people that will not care about the goverment at that time (because they will think they will die anyway) and will do whatever they want to (see where the riots come from ?)

The second story (your terrorist atack example) is only catastrophic to the nation (and specific to the city/area) of the atack. So no world wide catastrophies are occuring after a terrorist atack (not talkinga about the war that comes after that cause thats complety different set of circumstances) which means the legal/police system still works 100% all arround the globe.

So even if a few thousand people die in a bombing or any other terror atack its still fairly easy to maintain order arround the bomb site , on the other hand try to maintain order arround a whole country that belives it will be wiped out by tidal waves , earthquakes and other nasty scenarios
