Not really “gadgety” but look at this: Scientists at the University of Minnesota have announced that they have engineered a (rat) heart by growing muscle and endothelial (vein coating) cells in a “gelatin” heart-shaped scaffold that also had all the necessary conduits. At the end, the heart could pump at 1/4th of a normal heart rate.

It’s not operational yet, but that is a remarkable milestone on the road to possibly “grow organs”.

Pretty amazing! I wonder how far away we are from creating an organic human heart, instead of that artificial one.
