Use linux. Or get a Mac.

But if they really want to watch you, they'll read every packet of information that goes to and from your computer, so, I guess you'll just have to be watched.

does anybody out there know if it is true that from intel's pentium 2 onwards a 'back-door' was written into it's software enabling law enforcement agencies (cia) to log-on to your machine without your knowledge or consent

I don't think it matters what you do to try to stop "them" they will always find a way of looking at what you do on the internet but only if you give them reason to.
if you say certain words through email i'm pretty sure you'd be on the monitor list but other than that i think your quite safe

If you've been on some questionable sites i would lay low for a while and try to stay within the boundries of normal internet viewing,we've all over stepped the line once or twice i would have thought but not to do anybody any harm, just to find info or what not.
Like i said lay low and keep an eye on any emails you would not normally recieve

Never heard that, but I doubt it is built into a processor chip. A CPU is just a composition of transistors, its more likely your thinking abou the potential backdoor built into windows, in which groups like the NSA are speculated to be able to log into your system.

You want to keep the government off your system? Stay offline, thats about the only way.

No matter what encryption you use, no matter what firewall, there is always a way to break it, and frankly, the government has the resources to do so. But of course, you would have to warrent the use of such resources first. Which i doubt browsing a few site will really cause.

Cryptome has some "freedom of information act" articles posted about this and cellphone backdoors the NSA developed in cooperation with Intel, and Al Gore was the liason IIRC.

Linux and Mac won't help.
Maybe HexLiveCD might help. Maybe.

In reality though, your probably just being paranoid. (Like the rest of us).

Use anonymous public internet cafe's, or don't connect to the internet.

Those are your only two options.

As much as I hate to say it....god I hate this...."If you're not doing anything illegal, then you're ok."

Really though, you should not have to worry too much, it is exponentially difficult to police on an individual basis. You'd have to do something pretty blatent to show up on their radar.

I doubt there is anything you could do; as very recently i have been noticing strange things myself. My partner and i were talking on the phone a couple of weeks ago. we were both of landline phones. (wireless, though mines is the only one in the house; the other has long since been stuffed to the back of a cupboard) We happened to get onto the subject of ufo's for about five minutes, and joked that the cia was watching us.
To understand this, you'd really have to understand my habits; every time, when we hang up, i always press the call end button, then look at the little numbers on the screen untill they stop, and the normal screen comes up. This time when i pressed the button to hang up and looked at my phone, it flashed 'line in use' for about a second, but it was long enough for me to see, which freaked me out, as the only other time i have ever seen it do that, was when the other phone was also plugged in (which i know at that time, was impossible, as i later found it curled up, exactly where it had been left many months before)
also, during a couple of phone calls, we've both clearly heard a sound like the one you hear when you have two phones, and the one your not talking on gets picked up, letting the other person hear your conversation, but again, it was impossibe as we both only had one cordless phone.

maybe i'm just paranoid. does this happen to anyone else??

This is the correct answer!

Hey, call me strange, but I want my government to watch me.

Option two seems to be the only option. BitRaiser told us a story about how they tracked some criminal (forgot what crime it was, and which thread he said it) to his cyber cafe, and not just that, but they knew specifically which machine.

Your just being paraniod. Digital phone tapping doesnt give away any signs of you being watched. No clicking, no "line in use" flag, nothing. Unless someone was literally splicing your line with theirs, I doubt you'd know if a government agency was directly listening to your calls.

Dude, as far as the government watching your computer, they're not going to bother, unless you are doing a few things specifically, like hacking other computer users, posting on this website, or sharing Top Secret information with a known terrorist. Anything other than this has now been turned over to the domestic intelligence surveillance agencies like Seisant Technology, Equifax Credit, and your credit card companies.

You can find this domestic surveillance intelligence information that I've supplied you with in the following book :

Robert O'Harrow : Washington Post Reporter : No Place To Hide

Good luck not being watched while on your computer, as that's happening whether it's the government or civilian agencies that are assisting the government bypass the U.S. Constitution through utilizing the War on Terror as a means to take away our freedoms.
