'74 NIE Reveals CIA Suspected Israel of Iran Nuke Proliferation

haaretz.com

Israel was also suspected of providing nuclear materials, equipment or technology to Iran, South Africa and other then-friendly countries.

This top secret document, consigned to the CIA's vaults for almost 32 years, was suddenly released to the public this week, during U.S. President George W. Bush's visit to Israel and on the eve of his trip to the Persian Gulf.

The CIA was asked yesterday via e-mail about the strange coincidence of the document's release a mere month after the publication.

Back in '74, the CIA confirmed Israel's nuclear capabilities and already held strong suspicions the country was engaging in clandestine nuclear proliferation with the Shah's Iran and South Africa, then ruled by apartheid. Charming company.

Quite interesting is the CIA's timing of the NIE's release, coming during Bush's trip there. Someone in Langley is making a mordant point while W backslaps Olmert and b*slaps Iran.

The Haaretz article also offers this bonus amusement, doubtless the Biggest Understatement of the Week:

The issue of an American double standard regarding the nuclear activities of Israel and Iran often comes up when senior American officials visit the Gulf, as Secretary of Defense Robert Gates did last month.

gottago,

Thank you for finding this article.

This is very important information. We keep hearing about Iran's nuclear ambitions, and now it turns out Israel was helping them only 30 years ago.

Perhaps parts of the CIA do not want another way. Maybe they actually have a conscience after all!

Now people will start to realize that Israel in fact does have nuclear weapons, from OP article:

The Central Intelligence Agency, backed by bodies including the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research and the Defense Intelligence Agency, determined in August 1974 that Israel had nuclear "weapons in being," a "small number" of which it "produced and stockpiled."

And...

The CIA was asked yesterday via e-mail about the strange coincidence of the document's release a mere month after the publication of its awkwardly worded NIE on Iran's nuclear weapons program. It did not respond by deadline.

HA! Read below

The entire intelligence community determined, "Israel already has produced nuclear weapons." This analysis was based on "Israeli acquisition of large quantities of uranium," in part covertly; on Israel's ambiguous efforts to enrich uranium; and on the huge investment in the "Jericho" surface-to-surface missile "designed to accommodate nuclear warheads." Short of a grave threat to the nation's existence, Israel was not expected to confirm its suspected capability "by nuclear testing or by threats of use."

And in conclusion...

The authors of the NIE wrote that the U.S. helped France expedite its nuclear program, France in turn helped Israel, and much like France and India, Israel, "while unlikely to foster proliferation as a matter of national policy, probably will prove susceptible to the hue of economic and political advantages to be gained from exporting materials, technology and equipment relevant to nuclear weapons programs."

I thought nearly everyone agreed that they do.

Remember people that the Iran that Israel may have helped was a different government.

Unfortunately,

Not everyone on ATS knows Israel has nuclear weapons. I've run into quite a few people who seem to deny the existence of Israel's nuclear ambitions.

Iran may have been a US Puppet when Israel was trading with them, but they are more independent now. Arguably, the people are freer under an Islamic Republic than they were under the Shah.

As scary as it seems, the majority of the upcoming generation simply don't give a damn about Israel or the fearful reality it presents. I gave a small presentation in my History 12 class of 34 students last week on the chilling reality of Israel having nuclear weapons, using the image of a terrified child clutching a gun and pointing wildly at all the adults around it.

Sadly, no one really got it. The majority of the class metaphorically yawned, and a large percentage started to argue about "racism" "you're a Nazi!" and such. So much of the upcoming young ones are brainwashed to the "poor little mistreated for 2000 years" image of Israel these days.

You're very welcome, I too thought this article, appearing in a major Israeli newspaper, during W's visit, was quite important.

It's just these sorts of articles--not splashed across the front page, and not being extremely 'timely' but yet very pertinent to to the day's events--that indicate hidden agendas at work and markers being laid down between hidden governmental factions.

Semi-open communication, if you will. CIA is making its views known to Israeli elites, IMHO. The CIA just said, "Listen guys (guys being: Bush, Neocons, Israeli hardliners), we're not interested too much in war with Iran. You've got your nukes, you're hypocrites, and this whole media show of a Presidential visit is a crock."

By printing the article in Haaretz, the moderate Israeli faction just responded, "Message received and duly noted. We pretty much agree."
