really funny how fundamentalists, of AN religion or belief behave the same when some one disagrees.

christians, in this country and in the recent past, have been violent towards family clinics and abortion centers. remember the fire bombings? the atlanta olympic bombing was perpetrated by a "devout" christian. the assassination of the abortion doctors a decade ago? so as to say that it can not/does not happen here is a fallacy. maybe not as much! but it does.

this protest just follows others like it in the past. seem to recall the outcry about the "art" "piss christ." remember all the outrage about the movie, "the last temptation of christ"? former cat stevens, now yusuf islam, trying to justify the fatwa against salman rushdie? "when one insults a person, only one heart bleeds. when one insults the prophet, a billion hearts bleed"?

point? this is a world with an almost infinite diversity of beliefs. no matter what, some one some where is going to create something that will offend or upset somebody. would be nice if we could all just say "you know? i do not care for what you just said or made or what ever and i really wish you had not. but since you are a FREE individual and that right to do so, i can not stop you. just please try to respectful of all beliefs!"

the thing is though, why do people automatically make the jump that such and such thing was done to offend or to disrespect someones belief system?

this dude made jesus with a boner...big whoop
there have been some seriously warped 'art' that has been put out. i just don't get when it is a religious figure, people start flipping.....
it HAS to be cause i do not believe but as i said in this very thread...i can not imagine something that would offend me....
mess with my wife and child and i would be angry....maybe angry enough to put a few teeth down someones throat but i can't see myself getting offended cause of what someone else does, did, or will do......i just can't understand it.

you bring up good points about the abortion clinic bombings and the olympics....
that was a good post mang

That's traditionally an Islamic belief as far as I know - hence Islamic art's mastery of abstraction and geometric patterns.

I don't know of any Christian sect that holds this belief, though I suppose it wouldn't surprise me.

I still don't know where I stand on the artwork in question, after 16 pages.
I don't know if it's a testament to the humanity of Jesus or a cheap attempt at getting the artist attention by intentionally offending religious people.

maybe it's neither.
maybe the guy had a dream about a huge statue of jesus in full on erect mode and him being an artist decided to sculpt it.
could be that simple.

Yeah that's true.

Some art just expresses whatever is going on in the artists head, it doesn't necessarily have to mean anything.

What if the artist was paying homage to his Lord. Jesus was a man on this earth. I know that sounds pretty far-fetched, but I've seen homage paid to many things 'to many degrees'. What if the artist was simply implying that Jesus was human like you and me.

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, the 'representation of Jesus' might mean ALOT to this artist. We don't know what was going through his mind when he sculpted this work.

Until someone sits down and has an honest to goodness talk with this individual, and 'properly' give opinions first-hand, WE can only 'surmise', at this point, what his motives/reasonings behind his artwork entails.

To view...or not to view...
...THAT IS THE QUESTION.

exactly right...let me use frank zappa as an example again.

he composed about 471 original songs in his career. songs that were easy to catch the meaning of and songs like rdnzl that nobody knows what they mean...frank knew...nobody else did though.

he used to say that if you got it and you liked it, great, jump on board and if you didn't get it, thats just as well cause you were not supposed to.

sometimes artist just do things, especially when they are on the fringe.

yup. people always assume that the art was meant for them. maybe this guy sculpted it for himself and the people who 'got it'.

frank used to compose and play sick guitar solo's. not for you and me and his audience but for himself.
he said the only way he was able to hear what HE wanted was to play it himself.
maybe this artist is doing the same thing.

everyone is so fast to push the i'm offended button these days

Yeppers.

Until we sit down and discuss things 'eye-to-eye' with an individual, we only have our own thoughts and reasonings behind an issue.

So true.

correct....for fun though, lets say i looked at this and i was offended. is that my problem or is it his?
imo, it's my problem.
why would it be his problem that i got offended.......dude wanted to express what was in his head so he did.

Hmmmm

I wonder how crazy Muslims would be if there was a statue of Mohammed with the same...extention.

We all know they would destroy it, riot, and murder rape and destroy....

Remember France, there was a perfect example of Muslims at work.

Personally, I would advise the statue to be.......covered......in the right areas, but that is just me.

hey ras, isn't it like ramming your head against the wall or chewing on glass or something? 15 pages of 'it's just wrong'...
dayum.....ras/boon, meet brick wall

Maybe you people could try listening to the REAL side of this debate.

The majority of us aren't saying 'It's wrong, destroy it, censor it."

We're saying : IT'S STUPID. It's shock art and you people seem to think because it has a religious nature that it's somehow exceptional or worthwhile. Nope. It's shock-art and whether or not it offends some Christians, most of us think it's just plain stupid.

But really, I've been saying this for how many pages and you people are still on the same trip!

Not really buying that. If that were the case, any piece of art that depicted nudity would undergo the same scrutiny. We don't see people destroying art because it's blasphemous do we? Oh wait, sorry, Christians did do that didn't they. But that was hundreds of years ago. Christians have evolved right?

Translation: Christians are stupid and archaic, and they want to destroy art. I don't have the slightest desire to educate myself on real Christian moral code and I refuse to listen to all the Christians who are telling me this statue is stupid. I'm going to keep believing that they are all shocked and outraged and that they want to destroy this piece of art, because it fits my belief that Christians are stupid and archaic.

It's like listening to a broken record.

See, Christians and Muslims are more alike than they'd often admit. Thanks for coming out and admitting how alike they truly are centurion. It takes a big man to come out and say it.

Star for you!!

Do you have any examples of Christians blowing up ancient statues? Do you have any examples of Christians murdering people because of a cartoon?

Or are you just going to keep parading with your anti-religious, stereotypical BS?

Go ahead people, keep throwing Muslims and Christians together and pointing your finger at them. It just shows how desperate you are to paint a picture of the religious community in a bad light.

In other places, this would be considered outright prejudice. I'm not going to kid myself, you people ARE prejudiced. The way you're stereotyping Christians and Muslims in the same basket is nothing short of pathetic.

Get a %#&ing clue and go educate yourselves. Stop being so ridiculously one dimensional.

Yeah, and you will also NOT acknowledge the fact that NOBODY IN HERE HAS CALLED FOR CENSORSHIP!

It's like talking to brick walls in here.

Keep fighting your imaginary battle against religious censorship! We're behind you!

ok....you think it is stupid. the guy who sculpted it obviously don't think so, so, he sculpted it...you damn well know that you and the others that are riled up are only bunged cause it is jesus and not cause it is 'stupid'.

'shock art' is still art.
sculpters, musicians, painters, etc all have the right to put their 'stupid shock art' out there
