Instead of calling anyone who disagrees with you, as "retarded," why not explain to others why you're so against this statue? How is this any different than the statue of David?

Who was this artist? Has anyone tried to contact him/her? Perhaps he could come on here an enlighten some of these closed minded penisphobic folks. I mean maybe the artist loves jesus and loves hard ons and wanted to combine his two passions? At the end of the day who has this statue hurt? NO ONE! Find it offensive? Dont look at it. Dont like statues with erect penis? Go view David. It really is that simple. We all have the right to love, hate or not give a crap about jesus and if you have a problem with that your free to leave the country.

Seriously. Stop being retards.

I don't care how much you hate the statue. Insulting your fellow ATS members will not be tolerated. I would recommend calming down and learning how to discuss heated topics with the same sort of tact, decorum, and taste that you demand from art.

I can see why Christians would get riled up.

I can appreciate art as much as the next person, however respect and decency has pretty much gone out the window with this blatent attempt to enlist negative behavior from Christian crowds.

Did the artist not concider the reprecussions? Mabey. Well, now this person has their 15 minutes of fame.

The ones that hold true to the 10 Commandments (paraphrasing):

"Thou shalt not make any Graven IMAGES...

Then we should have burned Leonardo and Michelangelo at the stake. For that matter, the guy who makes those paint-by-number Jesus pictures.

It's all or nothing homey.

get over yourselves.

All you keep saying is our comments are not progressive. Who said anything about being progressive. You are blind to the point people who do not think as you do are trying to make. It is about art being in the eye of the beholder. People need to decide for themselves how this and all art makes them feel. Unlike you have tried to spew name calling of fellow members, we are trying to get an answer as to why Christians are so riled up over this. And as Raso keeps trying to point out, no one has answered us yet? The issue keeps getting dodged. I hope you are forgiven by your God for not showing a bit of respect of others opinions whether you think they are wrong or not.

Apples and oranges.

Leonardo and Michelangelo wern't 'holy' people; let alone head of any religious organizations.

I might have a 'male-looking' avatar, but I'm not a homey.

Not sure what you meant by that. The graven images thing was about the artists depicting holy people, not that they are holy themselves.

Homey is all inclusive. Homeboy, homegirl, homeskillet, homeslice etc.

It doesn't even offend me because it is not even Jesus that is sculpted. I will
say it again, there are no substantial archaeological evidences which accurately depicts how Christ looks.

True Christians don't even worship statues as it is specifically forbidden.

Romans 1

22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

This constitutes to idolatry. We don't bow down and worship a statue. Anyone skilled in sculpting can sculpt a long haired dude being crucified and create an offensive part of the statue and being ignorant of the scriptures, label it as "Jesus" as commonly depicted by the Roman pagans. Crucifiction is common in ancient Rome. I'm sure there are a lot of long haired dudes being crucified during those times.

This false pagan image of Christ has been passed on throughout the ages and many people are so ignorant and gullible. That is not the image of Christ and I repeat again, Jews are forbidden to wear long hair. Christ would have forbidden any images of Him in the arts.

"You shall have no graven images before me" - The Ten Commandments.

So, I don't think any true Christians should get worked up and get offended because the truth is, there is no such thing as the image of Christ. Ignorant people just love to twist the truth and substitute the glory of God to their own pagan deities.

For crying out loud, how many times do I have to repeat myself. Do you actually read the posts? I will say it again one last time.

Its called having some respect. Geesh!
Look, try and think about your immediate family. You would not want someone to show disrespect by cursing at your momma or grandma would you? You would not want someone to show disrespect to your sister or mother my making vile gestures to them. I guess in the name of art anything goes and respect & civility just goes out the window.

You can keep repeating 'respectful' but it doesn't answer the question.

What is disrespectful about a penis?

The analogies you gave are not the same IMO.

Why do you think the artist is cursing at jesus or making vile gestures at jesus.

I suppose the question was and still is:

"What is VILE about a penis"?

This question, you still have not answered to the satisfaction of several posters, including myself.

However, your comments (and the stars the posts are getting) do seem to lend credence to the suggestions made earlier that christians are uptight about the natural form and find the penis dirty (or vile to use your word)

So, this statement begs the question, did he exist? If there is no true proof of what he looked like, how do we know he really existed? Just asking the question I am sure non-believers might ask. And, if this is the case, why are so many getting riled up over the fact that "it isn't Jesus" as you claim? Again, how is it that so many people can follow something when there is no proof of existence? What is the proof that people base their belief on? It is almost like aliens and UFO's IMO. All the evidence seems to never be solid. When it comes to religion, the only thing is a book written by men who have claimed to have been writing "through" the eyes of God.

As a Catholic, the art doesn't offend me.

As an self professed amateur art critic.. it Offends me.

The artist is trying to sell his crap for the highest dollar, and to put a shock value to a piece of work only insures that.

To each his own.

if there realliy is a god, i bet he'd be more upset that millions of people and children are dying of starvation as we speak--i bet he could care less about tthis statue

and i bet all though so upset have a nice home, car, and plenty of needless luxuries---yetr one of gods children just died of hunger while we type away on our hundreds of dollars computer

also, don't people realize that they just gave this artist all the attention he was seeking and world wide renown---if nothing was said it'd be gone soon enuff and the whole world wouldn't know about a jesus statue with a big ole schlang!!!!! how ridiculous

So I emailed Terrence about his piece (
)

Here's what I wrote:

Hello Terrence,

I'm a member of a conspiracy discussion board and your recent 'controversial' Jesus statue has incurred quite a debate. There are some of us who are essentially laughing at these fundamental Christians freaking out, and others who are defending them massively. If you're interested in what some are saying (not that you necessarily would be) here's a link.

If you want my personal opinion, I've made it quite clear in the thread.

And as you probably know by the number of hits on your site, any controversy is good controversy.

Enjoy!

Peace,

Ras

And here's the awesome response I got.

peace to you too ras!

i hope jesus wood forgive me

This is not art it is filth how do you dare vilify the Holy son of God! Jesus who was perfect love came to earth and died for your sins Mr Koh. I will pray that you will repent and ask God to forgive your sins.

“For GOD so loved TERENCE KOH that HE gave his only begotten SON, that if TERENCE KOH Believeth in HIM, TERENCE KOH shall not perish but have everlasting life” John 3 v 16.

Even you can be forgiven if you but turn to God and ask for forgiveness of your sins, if you do not then Hell is where you will go when you die and it will last for eternity turn now to the one you have vilified and be saved before it is too late.

Dear Terence

The Lord will forgive you He loves you and gave His life for you on the cross of Calvary, the people who crucified Him with nails on the cross as He was suffering in agony and dying, He said "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23 V 34. He forgave them and if you pray with all your heart and are truly repentant He will forgive you and the joy He gives is like none other.

I will keep praying for you that the Lord will come into your heart and that you will find peace.

Yours in Jesus Christ

Margaret

I had the great misfortune of having to see the Zabludowicz Collection at the Baltic Centre yesterday when a number of us - mainly Catholics - met to object to the blasphemous & pornographic image on show there. I viewed the pieces unwillingly but it was necessary so that I could raise my concerns with both the officials of the centre & with the police.

Apart from the fact that, in my opinion, none of the works in the collection show any merit whatsoever, I found it particularly offensive that your depiction of Jesus Christ with an erect penis should be based on a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus which holds a place of special sanctity within our religion. Not only that but it seems as if you have simply copied an existing statue of the Sacred Heart & added the monstrosity as an afterthought. I wonder whether such an action might infringe on someone's copyright? You have no need to worry about someone infringing your copyright as, quite frankly, you have produced absolutely nothing worth copying.

It is said that you are Chinese & no doubt in the fullness of time that inhuman regime, which you appear to support, will reward you with some base honour - perhaps 'Hero of Pornography'? - for carrying out their avowed intent to remove all religion.

Many of us will continue to pray for you, the owner of the collection (who must have more money than sense) & the misguided officials of the Baltic Centre for allowing such disgusting images to be publicly displayed.

Hi There,

Yup! No doubt about it, the artist has given Jesus a considerable God-like phallus, but honestly, it is known that 'art' is there to challenge perception and status quo. It is meant to rile and to stir the bile of the sheeple...that in itself, is the want of any self-respecting artist in whatever medium they work their art.

This is a depiction of 'humanism', not of the stereotypes of well-known historical and mythical personages, but the humanizing of our own concepts of such personages...the artist is challenging our own perceptions of them. Rightly so, for do not all the people we idolize or look up to, necessarily (and quite naturally) share the same biological function as ourselves in say...using a toilet?

Of course they do, but we do not want to consider such a function in the same thought processes whilst thinking of those we put on pedastals of greatness or brilliance. We may find such thinking as demeaning to our perserverance to hope and to our dreams. The emperor is not wearing 'new' clothes, but is actually 'naked'! In such a situation, we no longer see his majesty or his noblesse oblige, we see him as a mere human with the same fallability as ourselves. The problem does not lay in the personages, but in how we allow ourselves to be represented by them.

Whether you agree with the artist is irrelevant, it is understanding the 'intent' of his statement that matters. Only from that understanding can you deny the work of its challenge to one's own principles. Personally, I think the artist's intent fails, but then, each to his own.

Puts a new meaning to "Not with Jesus's penis and God pushing!"? (when refering to how you would NOT do erm someone)
Or a reference? So you can point to it and say not with that?
