The great adventurer Sir Edmund Hillary has died at the age of 88.

Sir Ed's health had been in decline since April, after he suffered a fall while in Nepal.

Sir Ed was the first man to climb Everest with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

The man who conquered Everest who's quality's are as much a part of our make up as the ANZACs as died. For those non NZDers Hillary is held in the same regard as Don Bradman is in Australia. Ed is on the NZ five dollar note.

RIP NZ will always be proud of Sir Edmund Hillary.

Saw this, this morning on tea break...thought to myself this is one of those milestone people...you remember where you were what you we re doing when you heard.

He was a much beloved and revered person in NZ history and world history as well.
My heart goes out to my adopted counrty.

Nepal will miss him too!
