There was a book that just came out recently
The Body has a Mind of It's Own: How Body
Maps Help us do Nearly Everything better
It is really quite good in doing a lay person's review of the literature in how we are learning how the brain does this. The phenomenon is is part
of of body mapping generated in the insula and may be responsible for why Reiki works and explaining Phantom limb syndrome as well. It is a
fascinating read and really pulls together the science.
I have seen auras since I can remember, and they they are quite annoying in public situations. I can't see squat in florescent lighting, but I am
pretty bother by florescent lights anyhow. I also have synesthesia, where input from different sensory experiences are cross processed in the brain.
Mine is color with touch, and pain, and when I touch other people, as well as with music, so it probably makes sense that I perceive auras as well.
The down side is that I am extra sensitive to vibrations and things like florescent lights, low bass in a car a mile away, a TENS unit, and cell
phone vibrations can feel very painful to me.
