news.bbc.co.uk

Afghanistan is appealing to the international community to provide extra supplies of wheat to alleviate a shortage, an Afghan minister has said.

Commerce Minister Mohammad Amin Farhang said the shortage could lead to serious problems during the winter.

This was obviously going to happen and is not the first time either.

This country has been brought down by a war on terrorism and now they are asking for help with food.

October 2002

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization appealed today for immediate help for Afghanistan and southern Africa, warning that failure to provide food and agricultural aid could lead to famine.

July 2005

The aid is urgently needed in northern Afghanistan, which is in the middle of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. After three successive droughts and two failed harvests, widespread famine conditions already exist in much of the region.

January 2006

Afghanistan does not have a viable economy. Its government is largely reliant on foreign aid, and as it struggles with an insurgency that on occasion has reached the capital, Kabul, it is almost wholly dependent on foreign troops for security.

June 2007

Afghan deportees continue to flow into Afghanistan. Since 21 April nearly 100,000 deportees have entered the country. The United Nations has launched a joint CERF Appeal of US$5.9 million to cover the needs of deportee families for an initial period of three months (June to August 2007).

As a part of this appeal, WFP has requested US$1.5 million to cover food needs of about 20,000 people so far, with an average of 80 new families expected each day in the coming months.

I'm seriously confused now. If America is at war with Afghanistan why are they being given aid? Why the constant same-old story?
Is this just a method to keep the people of Afghanistan angry and in fighting mood?

Does the American patriot act deem any country who gives Afghanistan aid as contributors towards terrorists?

This divide that is going on between certain 'groups' of 'terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq is laughable almost.

Forgive my faiding memory but were the host countries of supposed terrorists also deemed as terrorists themselves?

To me, this all looks like part of the ongoing plot to sustain an illegal war.

And now we also have this new thread too..

Is the food "shortage" affecting anyone else?
Here in the Philippines, certain foods had their prices raised a couple of weeks back. I'm almost certain it will be going up again pretty soon.

Is it designed to force panic buying and then to see more price rises due to 'shortages'?

America is not at war with Afghanistan, they are at war with the Taliban...

and giving aid can be used as propaganda.. kinda like when america gave aid to Iran (or offered it) when they had the earthquake a few years ago...

Confused yes. America is NOT at war with Afganistan.
In fact American hires local Afgans to work on the military base there (Bagram).

The US is there to fight the Taliban.......not the Afgan people.
