Suit says IBM dumped chemicals in New York state

news.yahoo.com

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Neighbors of a former IBM (IBM.N) plant in New York state sued the company on Thursday, saying it released chemicals into the air, ground and water for nearly 80 years that caused birth defects and cancer.

Some 90 residents of the upstate New York towns of Endicott and Union say that from 1924 to 2002, IBM dumped chemicals including trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene near the Endicott plant where the computer giant was born.

I found this article quite interesting when I ran across it. I figured this was or already happened, but didn't think I would see a report on such an act. Almost a 1,000 people harmed by chemicals. What would happened if something more harmful was "accidentally" let loose into the air?

I guess my first question is: What do those things (that I struggle to pronounce) do to you?

And does it harm human genetics?

They said in the report that it caused several birth defects, so possibly it could in adult also(later on maybe or if more was dumped) than just in an unborn child.

trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene are carcinogenic neurotoxins.

Check the wikipedia links for more info on the two widely spread contaminants.

News article about its mental effects scary.
