Passport cards for Americans who travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean will be equipped with technology that allows information on the card to be read from a distance.
The technology was approved Monday by the State Department.
The State Department said privacy protections will be built into the card.

Oh my my, that sounds safe.
All it takes is a smart terrorist to work out he can rig a bomb to only explode when an American or two are in the vicinity.
"This specific technology is better suited for tracking inventory, not people". Is that how the government is starting to view the people? Well, at least there won't be long lines at the FEMA camps with advanced technology like this.
I say stick with good 'ol paper passports, if you can. At least the computer chips in those can't be read at a distance (so they say, at least).

Pffft most passports are on a GPS system. I wouldnt worry about this.
