Hundreds Injured in Mass Jellyfish Attack on Brazilian Beach

www.foxnews.com

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Nearly 300 swimmers looking to cool off from a heat wave were stung by swarms of jellyfish that filled the shallow waters off a southeastern beach city, Brazilian media reported Sunday.

At least 15 people including children and teenagers were treated in Praia Grande for severe stings, doctor Adriano Bechara told the Tribuna newspaper, though their lives were not in danger.

Many of the injured arrived at medical centers Friday and Saturday crying from the pain of the stings, paramedic Claudio Casadei told Tribuna. Most were treated and released.

Sounds like several hundred Brazilians picked the wrong day to go swimming! Here is yet another disaster that Al Gore will probably blame on global warming!

I've seen concentrations of jellyfish here in Alaska in Prince Williams Sound. They were gathering near the mouth of a small river where presumably they were involved in jellyfish reproduction although the link below says they sometimes concentrate in areas of high plankton aggregation. There were literally thousands of them. Here's the link on jellyfish blooms.
