It all depends on how you look at it. If I were Putin, after watching the Bush Government's actions thus far in it's quest for oil, I'd wonder if the defensive shield was put in place to contain a Russian response to an attack? It's akin to the Russians putting a defensive shield in Canada!

Thank you for a well thought out and intelligent response. I couldn't agree with you more. When Russia started to install those missles in Cuba we were so upset we were willing to risk a nuclear exchange. And it didn't matter one single bit to the Unites States if the missles in Cuba were for defensive or offensive reasons, those missles were not going to be installed.
For us to reason that 'Russia was placing missles in Cuba for offensive reasons while the missles the U.S. are placing in Europe are for defensive reasons so that makes it O.K.' is invalid.

The biggest threat to world peace the American people face and indeed the whole world faces is coming from right here in the United States.

This is not a Democratic thing or a Republican thing. This is something else. And whatever you want to call it, it has been flourishing in the shadows of our Democracy for 50+ years now.

Please let all of us Americans wake up soon and realize that the biggest splinter is in our own eyes.

Iran and Russia do have a deal. But i really think that the US's need to control every corner of the world does lead to more. World domination.. your with us or your a terrorist. This is the new world wide attitude. Iran is years away from developing a warhead let alone a missle.. Will the US provide a true reason for these defences. No..

If USA wants to break past agreement, and be all rhetorical about it, than Russia SHOULD respond.

Pile up thousands of tanks on the Belarus border, as a means of accessing Poland in a matter of hours, and see what the Poles think about the missile shield idea THEN.

Another thing Russia could do, is push for Iran to be accepted into the SCO, which would mean both them and China would defend Iran, which means USA has no prospects for an invasion.

Well it actually is "where the US sees to fit". The Missile Defence Shield sites have to be placed in Poland (missiles itself) and in the Czech Republic (radar).

In both of the countries over 70 % people are against building these sites but the local authorities are refusing it to be a toppic for polls! It means the people won't have a chance to vote for or against. Both of the countries are members of the EU since May 2004. But both of the countries together with Hungary are behaving as Trojan Horses inside the EU being among the closest allies of the US and totally ignoring the EU official rhethorics regarding the War on Terror since 2001.

Me personally, I do not want any US troops on the Czech ground. I do not feel any threat from abroad - though we have already created enemies by participating in the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There is an important fact regarding the Missile Defence Shield. If you want to launch a ballistic intercontinental missile, you have to reach the stratosphere so you almost have to get to the space. In order to reach such altitudes, the ballistic missiles have to be launched heading to the East just as any space-ship does.

So if you build a defence shield in Poland and Czech against Iranian BIMs it means it is a total none sence because the missiles would have to be launched from Iran eastwards so they would have to fly all around the world over South America or the US and then first they would reach Europe.

So if "Uncle Bush" wants to help us fighting Iranian missiles it would be better for Europe to build them on the Eastern Coast of the U. S. and for the U. S. itself then anywhere like in the East of China or Russia.

So if you concider these it really seems the purpose of such a Missile "Defence Shield" is something else than guarding Europe from Iran. The reason and purpose are officially untold so we have to speculate on what it really is.

But regarding the position of the planned shield it rather are offencive US missiles heading to the East than any defence...

I do not want to see any US military men around my country which is nothing against the US citizens but against the war. What I say is the oppinion of over 70 % of the Polish and Czech people. We should all stand up and protest against the intention of our representatives to put Pandora's box around here in exchange for a few Dollars the US soldiers would spend on beer and girls.

People wake up! Maybe it is not too late yet...

"Im not worried about anything"
which is the problem with europe...They dont see threats. Mark Steyn explains brilliantly in his book "America Alone", the mentality of the average european.
Europe, sadly is falling. Not enough babys are being born, along with the fact that muslims will have to fill the void for the inept european birth rate.

What nobody realizes is how much Putin benefits from all this. This missile shield gives his supporters a rallying point. Realistically or not people in Russia fear the U.S. and its true intentions in the War on Terror. America's actions in Eastern Europe reinforce that fear, and appear to justify Putin's anti-U.S. rhetoric. Putin is using this to further his and his party's agenda, and to centralize power.

So wittingly or unwittingly the U.S. is helping Putin. It is also helping such countries as Iran and Syria. But why does it continue to do this? Maybe the U.S. wants stronger Kremlin and stronger Iran and Syria, as absurd as that sounds?

Why place an ineffective and obsolete missile shield in Eastern Europe, knowing perfectly well that your opponent will use it as a justification to develop new ICBMs and to help Iran and Syria develop nuclear technology? Either the U.S. foreign policy decision makers are completely retarded, or there is a less obvious agenda for all this. The U.S. likes Putin and stronger leadership in Russia for some reason, even if it is not directly obvious.

In either case Poland and Czech Republic are being used as lab rats. Soviet Union didn't give much crap about them, and now U.S. doesn't give much crap about them. The majority of people there recognize that nothing good can come from U.S. ABM on their soil. And the Americans have the decency to argue that the ABM is there to protect the Poles and the Czech. Who are you kidding? Everything the U.S. is doing is to protect itself, or at least the select interest group in the U.S.

You mean they should be more like the American Right, which sees threats everywhere?

And goes around the world poking hornets nests with sticks until - Viola! - a threat appears?

The "fear & loathing" crowd has most Americans so jacked up with false and exaggerated "threats" that we're willing to blow our tax money on a military budget larger than that of the rest of the planet combined.

All to build an empire that pretends it's not one.
And if you question why we should want an empire, or an imperial military, they try to tell you you're "anti-American"...

What a joke.

There is a threat to American freedoms, American prosperity, American life and limb.

Unfortunately it is our own ample supply of armchair warriors...

There are threats EVERYWHERE, Mr.xmotex...

Iraq was a mess, however terrorism existed long before the Iraq war 2, and long before 911.

You miss the point of my statement. Europe is falling, most europeans live in a utopia. Birth rates have fallen, and will have to be filled by muslims who do not share the same european ethics and morals. Its called Eurabia and it is very much so a threat to europe.

The US counters such threats, the mid east must be tamed. What part of the world is the most unstable part of the world? Its the part where hate, and propaganda are rampant...Where religion extremism is the rule of law.

The US military expedinture is only about 3-4 % of US GDP, which is about the average for every nation in the world. So while it is a huge amount, it isnt an imperialistic amount...

This is a typicall statement of an American who has never left the U. S. soil and has not learned any history to take a lesson from.

It really is the U. S. who is spreading terror around the world. The U. S. sees enemies everywhere. It is a typicall paranoia of iIsland-nations isolated from the rest of the world and all that's out there might be dangerous - they could come and take over our land!

Iraq has not meant any danger to the U. S. when Saddam was at power. Even Al-Quida was not present over there. The reason why the U. S. had to invade for the second time was Saddam's attitude to western oil-drilling companies who take 70 % of oil profits. He didn't agree with this. Another reason was that Saddam wanted to quit dealing oil in U. S. Dollars and wanted to change for the EURO which would damage the Dollar and would create a precedence for other Middle-Eastern countries to do the same as e. g. Iran wants now. How long do you thing will it take the U. S. or Israel or both to invade Iran after they have started trading oil in EUROS?

Regarding your statement about Europe dieing out - yes it is true and there are lots of immigrants comming too which is necessary but the majority of them are not muslims. And European nations have never had problems to get along with muslims actually, except for the period between approx. 1100 - 1600 after Christ. What is dangerous is the U. S. artificial anti-muslim policy.

Why would you want to tame people of the Middle-East? What do you know about them except that Osama comes from somewhere over there?

The U. S. behaves exactly in the same way as the Roman Empire at the end of its golden age. It took several centuries till the Empire has fallen but with nowadays technologies everything goes much faster.

Why don't your emperors take a lesson from the Brittish and French how to colonize the world without spreading wars? Both, the Brittish and the French are welcomed around the Middle-East and black Africa. They have already learned their hard lessons centuries ago. In Iraq the Brittish troops have learned the U. S. soldiers how to knock on the door! Have you seen how the U. S. troops behave in Iraq? Watch some videos on YouTube and try to ask your self why they are considered as intruders. It is all just about money not democracy. Democracy has become as profound as communism being missused by the U. S. authorities to invade any country. Why don't your troops "help" the poor Sudanese people? Why nobody "helped" the Rwandan people? Why nobody "helped" the Congoleeze people? There's not enough to drain!

Why is the U. S. participating in evoking conflicts in Somalia, Kenya, Erritrea, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad? Because they have accepted Chinese investments into their industries!

This was started all by the terrorists. the attacks on the US and NATO to attack Afghanistan to destroy the terrorists. Then Saddam who had bio-weapons and connections with terrorists forced NATO to invade also. Russia who claims that NATO harbors cold-war hatreds is angry with NATO countries. This forced us to put a missile shield in Europe where many of our NATO allies are located. Russia who sees this as a Post-Clod war hatred aggression. so we will have to be ready for invasion and war. So this is all setting up for WWIII
