Bush associates still consolidating their hold on US media

Oak Hill Partners lead investor Robert M. Bass, a longtime associate of George W. Bush, is also the founder of Ft. Worth, Texas-based Bass Brothers Enterprises. Oak Hill issued a statement announcing the stations would be jointly managed by a broadcast holding company, Local TV, that was created by Oak Hill for the purpose of purchasing 9 other television stations from The New York Times previously this year.

This is a complex story, however what it is saying in the headline does appear to have a ring of truth to it. The big point is here that the media is being consolidated by people close to Bush. So what is going on is a NeoCon consolidation of media. The story quoted also talks about lucrative Darpa contracts to the same company.

Fascist America, in 10 easy steps

Step 8:

8. Control the press

Italy in the 1920s, Germany in the 30s, East Germany in the 50s, Czechoslovakia in the 60s, the Latin American dictatorships in the 70s, China in the 80s and 90s - all dictatorships and would-be dictators target newspapers and journalists. They threaten and harass them in more open societies that they are seeking to close, and they arrest them and worse in societies that have been closed already.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says arrests of US journalists are at an all-time high: Josh Wolf (no relation), a blogger in San Francisco, has been put in jail for a year for refusing to turn over video of an anti-war demonstration; Homeland Security brought a criminal complaint against reporter Greg Palast, claiming he threatened "critical infrastructure" when he and a TV producer were filming victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Palast had written a bestseller critical of the Bush administration.

Other reporters and writers have been punished in other ways. Joseph C Wilson accused Bush, in a New York Times op-ed, of leading the country to war on the basis of a false charge that Saddam Hussein had acquired yellowcake uranium in Niger. His wife, Valerie Plame, was outed as a CIA spy - a form of retaliation that ended her career.

Abovetech,
Well put, and thanks for posting.

Also stared.

I cant shake the thought that the constitution will have to be changed also for that to happen completely.

another small step to state controlled media, not to mention the FCC
support of the conglomerates and stiflings independent efforts.

OK, so, what do/can we do about it?

Just another ho hum, chicken little, sky is falling, "look at me everybody I hate bush too" post probably posted while listening to an iPod.
But even if true and considering he has one year left in office what happens next?

I know there will be those that will say it's time for another revolution but these are usually the same people that are trying to get rid of guns in the first place, and you can't very well fight a revolution with pea shooters, crticism and insults.

I'm serious here, just what can we do?

Alxandro,
my first thought is to take your actions with your wallet. Meaning you don't have to watch or listen to the main stream media. The Internet does provide a multitude of avenues for finding information. The more people that do that the more will notice. I know data mining is happening, however at this point I don't know how bad it is happening in the U.S.
I rarely ever watch broadcast news any more. Pretty much only in the morning as a distraction.

I think a good start would be not elect Billary and try and make the elections at least seem fair. Of course we all know that its already preordained and the Bush/Clinton dynasty is going to continue for as long as they can make it go. Jeb Bush in 2012? Now I know why everyone is afraid of that date.

The thing is when you say "the media" seems like you are only referring to News but the entertainment media are just as dangerous. Hollywood perpetually promotes a decadent image of America and this is why the extremely fundie Islamo Fascists want to destroy America.

Anything Bush has done or is doing is only secondary yet people refuse to see it because they don't want to give up their People magazine, American Idol, Desparate Housewives, Girls gone Wild, (insert your fave vise here)....
This is what is destroying America from within.

It's the pornification of our culture and the Bush haters say "so what, I like it cuz it feels good and it makes me happy and you wont hurt my feelings". If that aint hypocrasy I don't know what is.

There was a time if we heard about Britney's sister getting pregnant we would say "oh my", now we ask "who is the father?"

Alxandro,
when I said the media, yes I was referring to mostly the news. In you post you made reference to all the other mass media programing. Yes that also does play a big part. I don't think you were completely correct in saying that is why everyone in the Mid East or where ever hates us. I have heard it said before that out biggest export is our culcher. And it is the culcher that the extremist in parts of the world hate.
As to all our programing, and culcher being bad, I prefer to think that the government can not control what the people decide the like, and everyone will chose there own culcher. So good bad or indifferent, culcher will be decided by those who live it.
Or I would like to hope so.

Red, I think you mean "culture"

I don't want to be the sp police; but I see your point.

It would be a foolish government indeed if It didn't control the media.
To think that it is free and open is very naive imo.

The www. is the last bastion of real freedom of expression and it won't be very long until the PTB clamp down on that freedom as well.

Whaaa
I know I can't spell be even though I use the spell check I do often miss one.

I am not so sure the government is entirely to blame for controlling the media. There are other forces at work also. If you will take the time to watch this video it will explain it.

Used to be that 'porn' was considered Playboy or Hustler magazine. Rock n Roll was considered the 'devil's music' and watching Woody Allen was un-american. It's all just a matter of degree really. All this 'Moral Decline' is as much hype as Hollywood itself. Just right-wing religious hype. People are no more or less 'moral' than they were a thousand years ago... no matter what Al Q'eda would have you believe.

There has always been mindless junk out there - and people who are stupid enough to watch it. Political propagands is another thing however...

Excuse me Jimbo but it was Tipper GORE that ran her crusade against the evils of rock music.
